Kevin Conroy’s acting career began in theatre.
Conroy, born November 30, 1955, received a scholarship to the Juilliard School’s drama department in 1973 and graduated in 1978. He later performed with John Houseman’s acting company, The Acting Company, in National tour of Ira Levin’s play Deathtrap.
Kevin then moved to California in 1980 and had a recurring role on the daytime soap opera Another World. He later appeared in plays such as Hamlet as well as other classical and modern theatrical productions. In 1985, he returned to television with the television series Covenant and starred in shows such as Dynasty, Ohara, Tour of Duty, Cheers, Search for Tomorrow, Matlock and others.
He became known for his role as the voice of Batman in the 1992 television series Batman: The Animated Series. Conroy continued to portray the DC superhero in subsequent episodes and movies, including The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, and Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero. He helped with relief operations after the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York by cooking for police officers and firefighters. In March 2014, he returned to the Arkham series as Batman in Batman: Arkham Knight.
Kevin also appeared in Tim Daly’s online series, playing Batman in a fight with Daly playing Superman. He later appeared in an episode of Batwoman as Bruce Wayne of Earth-99. Conroy, who is openly gay, earlier this year wrote the critically acclaimed novel In Search of Batman, chronicling his life and experiences as a gay man. The story appears in DC Comics’ annual LGBTQIA+ themed anthology. Conroy is survived by his wife Vaughn C. Williams, as well as his sister Trisha Conroy and brother Tom Conroy.
