According to the BBC, the singer told authorities that he shot himself while handling a gun he bought at a junk store. He bought the gun over the weekend.
The incident took place near a reception area of a community traveler camp located in Biscarosse, about 50 kilometers from Bordeaux.
The singer was taken to a hospital in Bordeaux, where he is in serious condition. However, despite the condition, the BBC reports that Girac’s life is no longer considered in danger.
Kendji Girac was scheduled to perform in Marseille this Friday to celebrate the upcoming Olympic flame. However, after the shooting, event organizers stated that the singer would no longer perform due to his injury.
A man named Emilio, said to be Girac’s uncle, claimed that this was not a “gang” shooting. “It’s an accident. He was playing with things and ‘bam’”
Speaking about the incident, French TV presenter Cyril Hanouna also said: “We are all shocked. We love him, he is a great guy, incredibly kind, always smiling and always willing to help.”
Kendji Girac, whose real name is Kendji Maille, grew up in the Catalan gypsy community. He is known as the “poster boy” of the French Gypsy community.

Girac was reportedly placed under armed guard in a secure medical unit. Olivier Janson, prosecutor of Mont-de-Marsan, confirmed that a “criminal investigation” has been launched. Janson also stated: “No theory of what happened has been ruled out.”
A source close to the investigation said at the time: “There are already many mysteries associated with this investigation. A large police team is in the camp, but they are not currently receiving much help from those who live there. Many refuse to talk to the police.”
Girac was also said to have been in Biscarrosse for several days with his partner several days before the accident. There have been no reports of incidents prior to the Girac shooting.
