Morgan Huxley sits alone at a small table in the lobby bar of The Oaks Hotel in Sydney’s Neutral Bay, sipping from a schooner and checking his Samsung Galaxy phone for new texts. The gorgeous, beard-covered 31-year-old is still wearing the cargo shorts and blue T-shirt he wore to his closest friend Chris Maroney’s engagement party in Lane Cove the night before. He writes another text message, this time to a woman he has known since elementary school and had a four-year relationship with.
Morgan is unaware of the guy standing outside the Curry Palace, an Indian eatery across the street, waiting and observing. Only 20 minutes prior, Morgan was standing behind a thin 20-year-old with spectacles and wavy ginger hair at the EasyMart as he clumsily attempted to withdraw money from an ATM.
A young man afterwards observed Morgan cross the street in his bare feet while being turned away from The Oaks’ posh back bar. The young man who gave Morgan the moniker ‘No Shoes’ to the security guard outside the Indian restaurant. As Morgan walks inside the hotel’s less formal front bar, the two start chit-chatting. a young man whose middle name is Jack but who goes by Daniel as his given name.
Jack Kelsall may appear to be your standard nerd—docile and owllike—but on the inside, he’s a boiling pit of frigid rage that, under the wrong set of circumstances, may mutate into something repulsive and terrible. He has completed his stint at the culinary facility cleaning dishes for a 21st birthday party.
