“Honestly, I think it was well written,” he said. “I think there’s kind of a misconception that a romantic comedy is supposed to have a certain formula, and it does, there’s a formula that works… But it also starts with the writing.”
“We went through several writers and made sure we had a great foundation for the script and then the cast,” he continued.
Kate then went on to discuss what rom-coms are seemingly missing these days and what they need to improve on, besides the writing.
“It’s hard to get male movie stars to do romantic comedies, and I think a big part of the equation is having an event,” Kate said. “As long as we can get more Marvel guys to say, ‘Hey, come make a romantic comedy!’ I think that’s a big part of the formula as well.”
Kate concluded that to make a good romantic comedy, “it’s about the writing and how we invest and tell the story. The writing and the directors. “If you look at the classic romantic comedies or the movies that last, and they do, they’re the ones that last forever and people come back again and again.”
“I think it’s more about how studios are investing in talent.”
