Jayden “Jayo” Archer, a motocross star best known as the first person to perform a triple backflip in competition, died at the age of 27 following an accident in trick practice.
Nitro Circus, the action sports group behind Archer, revealed in an Instagram post that the motocross athlete died while trying to recreate his upside-down move during exercises in Melbourne on Wednesday, February 21.
“Jayo was the epitome of passion and hard work. [and] determination,” said Nitro Circus. “He took what was possible on a dirt bike to heights never seen before. A positive influence on those around you. And above all, a great human being and friend to all of us.”
In a statement to ESPN, Travis Pastrana of Nitro Circus stated that Jayo Archer’s death really hits home. “Jayo grew up in a time when action sports were at their peak,” Pastrana said. “And he always wanted to do big things like the double and triple, even though there weren’t many places to show off those bigger tricks.”
Pastrana also said Archer would get up every morning and go to the gym before work just so he could ride his dirt bike. “When he came to Maryland to train, he stayed at my house and was an incredible role model for my children. “First he was a great human being, then a great worker and, thirdly, a bad son of a bitch.”
Jayo Archer achieved the triple backflip during a competition in November 2022
ESPN further reported that Jayo Archer landed his famous triple backflip during the Best Trick at the Nitro World Games in Brisbane, Australia, in November 2022.
“I can’t describe this feeling,” Archer said after the event. “This is much more than a gimmick to me. I have dedicated my entire life the last three years to this moment. “There were a lot of obstacles, broken bones and knockouts, and I would do it 100 times to relive that moment again.”
After the interview, Jayo Archer proposed to his girlfriend, Beth King. They were scheduled to get married this year.
Ricky Melnik, senior vice president and general manager of Nitro Circus, said that no one had a bigger heart or more determination than Archer. “We called him the Incredible Hulk. He was a beast on the bike and a gentle giant off it. Watching him go through the learning process and perform the triple flip in competition was very inspiring.”
Archer was a member of Nitro Circus for over 10 years. He held his first motocross show in 2012. Archer appeared at the 2021 X Games and placed sixth in Best Trick.
Scott Guglielmino, interim COO of X Games, issued a statement regarding Archer’s sudden death. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jayo Archer and our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and his fiancee. “The X Games family will miss Jayo, one of the most committed and charismatic FMX drivers.”
