Karan started his career as a cinematographer in the early 1990s. In 2000, he made his debut as an assistant director with the Hindi film ‘Pukar’. Some of his other Hindi films as an assistant director are ‘Lajja’ (2001), ‘Main Hoon Na’ (2004), ‘Jodha Akbar’ (2008), and ‘My Name Is Khan’ (2010). He made his debut as a director and screenwriter with the Hindi film ‘Agneepath’ (2012), for which he won the Zee Cine Award for Special Award Power-Club Box Office. He has worked as a director in many Hindi films like ‘Brothers’ (2015) and ‘Shamshera’ (2022).

In 2016, he started working on the Hindi film ‘Shuddhi’. The film was an adaptation of Amish Tripathi’s book “The Immortals of Meluha”. The makers of the film faced many problems in choosing the cast of the film. Later this film was closed.

During an interview, when he was asked about his experience of working with Indian producer Aditya Chopra, he said,
My first instinct was that I would really enjoy working with him. He is a producer who has ownership of his films, whether they perform well or not. He stands with them and that is the most important thing. This is a great value. If you’re a director, he’s a great producer.”
