For the first time in 25 years, American actor Johnny Depp will helm a feature film about Italian artist Amede Modigliani. According to Deadline, the 59-year-old actor will also co-produce the film with Al Pacino and Barry Navidi, based on the 48-hour life of Modigliani, who died of poverty in the 1920s. Modigliani is based on Dennis McIntyre’s 1979 play of the same name, which depicts the artist’s life in Paris in 1916. The film will be Johnny Depp’s second directing effort. He made his directorial debut with the 1997 film The Brave, starring Marlon Brando.

Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy on July 12, 1884. He is a sculptor and painter whose work is characterized by elongated figures, asymmetrical composition and the use of basic lines. Modigliani was born in Italy to Jewish parents and moved to Paris in 1906. There he joined the art scene of Montmartre, where he met artists such as Constantin Brancusi and Pablo Picasso, who influenced the minimalistic nature of his works. The artist also appreciated traditional Italian Renaissance painting, which he studied as an art student in Florence and Venice.
Career
At the Salon d’Automne in 1912, he presented his work of eight stone heads of simpler and more elongated shapes influenced by African sculpture. Amedeo, who was not a professional painter, painted not only for friends and celebrities in the creative society of Paris, but also for servants, models, and anonymous inhabitants of the neighborhood. In 1917, he began a series of about 30 large nude paintings, which are considered one of his finest works because of their vibrant, warm colors and voluptuous rounded forms.
As for his private life, he began a cohabitation with Jeanne Hébuterne in 1917. The two lived in Côte d’Azur with a daughter born in November 1918. For years, the tragic background of Modigliani’s life overshadowed critical reviews of his art. He is still considered one of the most prominent and unique artists of his generation. Filming for Johnny Depp’s next movie is slated to begin in Europe in 2023. The film’s cast has yet to be announced.
Professionally, Depp is currently filming Mawenn’s historical drama Jeanne du Barry, in which he plays King Louis XV. Filming begins on July 26 and will be shot in several locations across Paris, including Versailles and other arrondissements. Johnny Depp recently won a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, based on an editorial she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018.
