John Stamos recalls drinking a ‘bottle of wine’ to forget 2015 DUI

Almost nine years after his DUI in 2015, Full house Star John Stamos recalls details from the night, including what happened after the unfortunate event.

During his recent interview with PEOPLE, Stamos talked about how he ended up going to the hospital after the DUI. “That night I came home from the hospital, sat down and drank a bottle of wine just to forget what had just happened,” he explained.

Although he immediately went to Canada to film My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 After the incident, John Stamos admitted that he continued drinking to keep his mind off of what happened. “When you’re sober, you have to look at the ugly truth,” he continued. “So you keep drinking. So I was vaguely impressed during the filming of that movie.”

Stamos also spoke about Mayim Bialik’s decision Bialik Breakdown podcast about being so “drunk” during the My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 production. He admitted that the DUI and the movie were his lowest point.

“That was the bottom line,” he shared. “But I didn’t understand it and after that I went numb for a few weeks. And when I got home, my sisters were like, ‘Okay, it’s time to go, we found this place.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, I’m ready.'”

John Stamos said he “hated” the person he became

Meanwhile, John Stamos stated that after his 30-day stint in the substance abuse program, he hated the person he had become. He was willing to make a change for the better.

“I hated it,” he said of his former self. “I hated the way I felt, I hated disappointing people, I hated myself, I hated looking in the mirror and saying, ‘This is not who my parents raised.’ What am I doing? Who is this idiot?’”

Stamos further noted how ashamed he was of himself. “I had everything growing up. I had a beautiful childhood,” he continued. The actor later said that he had no reason to ruin his life. “And I did it and it made me sick.”

John Stamos previously spoke to USA TODAY about writing about his DUI in his memoir. “Writing about [the DUI] “It just made me feel sick to my stomach because I could have killed someone,” he explained. “It was just disgusting where I had ended up, where I threw all the family values, morals and beliefs I had had for so many years out the window.”

Stamos added that being sober played a “major role” in the ending of their fairy tale.
