Coi Leray (real name Brittany Collins) is an American rapper famous for her critically acclaimed 2020 EP. Now or never. Leray caused a sensation with his debut single GAIN in December 2017. He followed it up with another hit single titled pac girl. Leray’s debut EP allcoz dropped three months after its debut.
Leray’s rapid rise landed him a contract with Republic Records in early 2019. In August 2020, Leray released his most famous project. Now or never. The EP featured A-list artists like Gunna, Fetty Wap and Sevyn Streeter. Coi described the EP as “twerking music, pain music, some R&B and some trap”.
This piece will focus on Coi’s parents and the feud he has with his father Benzino.

Coi Leray was born on May 11, 1997 in the United States. She was raised by her father Benzino and her anonymous mother. After Coi burst onto the scene, she had nothing but praise for her father Benzino hers.
Benzino is known for being the founder of the hip-hop magazine The fountain and appearing in Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta since 2012. He has released a lot of music, including a mixtape titled Benzino Presents: Die Another Day: Flawless Victorywhich was a diss project targeting rapper Eminem.
In a September 2020 appearance on the no bridge podcast, Coi described Benzino as one of his biggest inspirations. “What I took from you [Benzino] it was just the ability to go really hard and rush it,” Coi said. Leray described Benzino as a man who loved his music, even when he didn’t get the airplay he deserved.
“He was like, ‘I don’t give a fuck if I’m on the radio, if nobody listens to my shit, I like making music and that’s what I do, and I’m never going to stop,’ ‘” Coi added. At the beginning of January 2021, everything seemed to be going well between Benzino and Coi, since Benzino berated rapper Royce Da 5’9 for dragging Leray into his fight.
Things got worse after Coi accused Benzino of being an unsupportive father on the remix of no more parties. “My dad let me down but I promise I won’t,” Coi rapped. “I want to say fuck that man, but that shit won’t make me any better.”
Benzino accused Coi’s mother of fueling the feud between him and Leray
Coi’s lyrics sparked a barrage of insults between Benzino and Leray. Benzino responded via an impassioned Instagram post, accusing Coi of tarnishing her name and calling out Leray for lying on her song. “You know I was there every step of the way and when the going got tough I was still there,” Benzino wrote. “I’m always there when things get ugly, I only have 7 numbers to go.”
“Tell your mother that enough is enough.” Leray was quick to respond via an Instagram Stories tirade in which she accused Benzino of being lame and “burning all his bridges.” In another Instagram Live tirade, she criticized Benzino for not appreciating his music and attacking her online. Leray kept the insults to himself and the more damning accusations for Twitter.
“About a month ago he called me,” Coi tweeted. “We talked. I told him I needed him. I needed my father in this cold world. He said it should have been a boy. In another tweet, Coi wrote: ‘I’M ASHAMED TO BE YOUR DAUGHTER.’ Don’t take it lightly. The accusations de Coi, as he responded via Instagram Live, again accusing Coi’s mother of fueling the feud between him and Leray:
“Coi had everything he wanted… His mother poisoned that. Many mothers do that to children. That is common in the neighborhood. The mothers get angry because you are no longer with them and they start poisoning the minds of the children. I met Coi’s mother in her projects… I took care of her two children of hers who were not mine. Did she tell you that too? She get out of here. You all are stupid.
Benzino’s post marked what appears to be the end of his feud with Coi. The couple deleted all the insults they had posted about each other via Twitter and Instagram. In a series of posts on Twitter, Coi acknowledged that he went too far. She wrote:
Forgive me for going out of character. I thought I had prepared myself for this moment, but I’m not ready yet. I’m still angry. Don’t hold grudges. Let people be miserable and only love from a distance.”
In a follow-up tweet, Coi regretted responding to Benzino, but called the episode a valuable learning experience. “That was a test and I’m sorry I couldn’t answer” she wrote. “Not everything needs an answer. It’s great, I’m learning.”
