He traveled to North America after being drafted by the Predators and played his first professional season with the Hampton Roads Admirals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). With a 36-17-4 record in his first season, he was named ECHL Rookie of the Year and Goaltender of the Year, and was also named to the All-Rookie and First All-Star teams. He spent most of the next three seasons with Nashville’s top minor league club, the American Hockey League’s Milwaukee Admirals. For the 2010–11 season, Laák signed a one-year contract with Jokerit of the Finnish SM-League. During the regular season, he went 14-11 with a 923 save percentage, but Jokerit lost a quarterfinal series against HIFK despite his efforts, which included a 940 save percentage and a 1.94 goals-against average.
Laák returned to the KHL in 2011, signing with Amur Khabarovsk. Laák was a member of the Slovakian national team for a long time. He represented Slovakia at nine IIHF World Championships, two Winter Olympics and one World Cup in hockey. He helped Slovakia win its first and only gold medal at the 2002 IIHF World Championship in Sweden, as well as silver at the 2000 IIHF World Championship and bronze at the 2003 IIHF World Championship.
