Career
He traveled to North America after being drafted by the Predators and played his first professional season with the Hampton Roads Admirals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). With a 36-17-4 record in his first season, he was named ECHL Rookie of the Year and Goaltender of the Year, and was also named to the All-Rookie and First All-Star teams. He spent most of the next three seasons with Nashville’s top minor league club, the American Hockey League’s Milwaukee Admirals. He was 53-49-12 with Milwaukee and saw minimal action with the Predators. However, he failed to earn a regular place with the Predators, playing in just 6 games and going 0-4 for the club.
Laák decided to return to Europe after failing to stay with the Predators, spending the 2003-2004 season. with SKA St. Petersburg in the Russian Super League. The following year, he moved to the Czech Republic to play for HC Pardubice in the Czech Extraliga, where he would stay for the next five seasons. He had a lot of success with Pardubice, achieving 116-85-5 and leading them to the championship title in 2004-05. Laák played the 2009–10 season for Atlant Mytishchi of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) after a successful run in the Czech Extraliga. As the team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, he compiled an 11-6-4 record. He also spent part of the season on loan at HC Koice in the Slovak Extraliga, where he played in 17 games.
For the 2010–11 season, Laák signed a one-year contract with Jokerit of the Finnish SM-League. During the regular season, he went 14-11 with a 923 save percentage, but Jokerit lost a quarterfinal series against HIFK despite his efforts, which included a 940 save percentage and a 1.94 goals-against average.
Laák returned to the KHL in 2011, signing with Amur Khabarovsk. Laák was a member of the Slovakian national team for a long time. He represented Slovakia at nine IIHF World Championships, two Winter Olympics and one World Cup in hockey. He helped Slovakia win its first and only gold medal at the 2002 IIHF World Championship in Sweden, as well as silver at the 2000 IIHF World Championship and bronze at the 2003 IIHF World Championship.
