Politics
Indian National Congress (INC)
He entered politics through the Indian Youth Congress (IYC). Kamboj is the former general secretary of All India Youth Congress. He has also served as in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir Youth Congress and Haryana Youth Congress. As a member of IYC, Jagdeep Kamboj actively participated in various protests. In 2018, he participated in the protests organized in Delhi against the Modi government for increasing petrol prices.
Kamboj wanted to contest the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election from Jalalabad assembly constituency on an Indian National Congress ticket, but the party declared Ravneet Singh Bittu as its candidate at that time. When by-elections in Shahkot assembly constituency became necessary due to the death of Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Ajit Singh Kohar on 4 February 2018, Kamboj actively campaigned for the Congress.
On 23 September 2019, Kamboj wrote a letter to BV Srinivas (President of IYC) announcing his resignation from the post of National Secretary of IYC and his decision to leave the party. Kamboj broke away from Congress in protest against allotting the party ticket from Jalalabad constituency to Raminder Singh Awala, who hails from Guru Har Sahay assembly constituency, instead of being a native of Jalalabad. Angered by this matter, Kamboj decided to contest the elections as an independent candidate. On 11 October 2019, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President Sunil Jakhar said in a letter that Kamboj was expelled from the Congress for anti-party activities. It said Kamboj was contesting the 2019 Jalalabad assembly by-election against Congress’ official candidate Raminder Singh Awala.
Independent candidate during 2019 Jalalabad by-election
Jalalabad assembly seat, previously represented by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, fell vacant after his election to the Lok Sabha. Therefore, this seat was contested during the 2019 by-election in Punjab. Jagdeep Kamboj had contested the by-election independently from Jalalabad assembly constituency after being denied ticket by Congress. His election symbol was “A man driving a tractor” and his election slogan was “Leader not son.”
He received 5,836 votes and lost the election. Congress candidate Raminder Singh Awala won the election by defeating SAD candidate Raj Singh Dibbipura by 16,000 votes.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)
Kamboj joined the Aam Aadmi Party in February 2020. Later, he was appointed as the state president of BC wing of AAP. In December 2021, Aam Aadmi Party declared Jagdeep as its candidate from Jalalabad constituency for the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. On 10 March 2022, Jagdeep Kamboj won the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election from Jalalabad Assembly constituency, defeating Sukhbir Singh Badal by over 30,000 votes. The defeat of Sukhbir Singh Badal was a major event in the history of Jalalabad as Badal had been a three-time MLA from this constituency.
Meanwhile, AAP, led by chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann, won 92 out of 117 seats in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections and formed its first state government in Punjab.
