Just weeks after Taylor Swift sent X (formerly Twitter) user Jack Sweeney a cease and desist for tracking her plane, the University of Central Florida student responded on his social media account.
As previously reported, Sweeney was sent the letter after he began tracking Swift’s plane. The college student is known for tracking flight records of planes and helicopters owned by billionaires, politicians and other public figures. He has noted that all information is publicly available at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
However, Taylor Swift’s lawyer at the Washington law firm Venable demanded that Sweeney stop his “stalking and harassing” behavior. If she did not do so, she had to seek all legal remedies. Swift’s legal team said the tracking had caused her and her family “direct and irreparable” harm. “While this may be a game for you, or an avenue you hope will bring you wealth or fame, it is a matter of life and death for our Client,” the letter states.
The legal team also stated that “there is no legitimate interest or public need for this information.”
“Other than stalking, harassing, and exerting dominance and control,” the letter continues.
Jack Sweeney responds to Taylor Swift with legal receipts
In his latest post on X, Jack Sweeney shared the letter he had sent to Taylor Swift and her legal team. Slater Legal, along with Ethan Jacobs of Ethan Jacobs Law Corporation, which represents Sweeney’s GRNDCTRL, LLC, sent the letter.
“Simply put, there is nothing illegal about GRNDCTRL’s use of publicly accessible information to track private aircraft,” the letter reads. “Including those used by public figures like Taylor Swift.”
Slater Legal also posted a link to an article detailing how Sweeney’s accounts followed the Russian oligarchs’ planes. The legal team said Taylor Swift’s Jet account is “engaged in protected speech that does not violate any of Ms. Swift’s legal rights.”
“Your letter makes this clear by not identifying any legal claims,” the letter continues. “Only in the footnote of your December 22, 2023 letter do you flirt with the possibility of asserting a harassment claim under California law, but the language before the words you cite explains that a harasser is someone who makes a “credible threat” against the victim. ”
Slater Legal also stated that Sweeney has never threatened Swift. “Furthermore, the tone of alarm in her letter is unfounded. Our clients’ website only provides the location of private aircraft using publicly available information. “That information does not pose any threat to Ms. Swift’s safety.”
Sweeney went on to share the letter from Taylor Swift’s legal team also. “For reference, the first letter from the Swift team,” she wrote.
