Hurricane G Passed Away At The Age Of 52

Popular rapper Hurricane G passed away on November 6 at the age of 52. Rapper Erick Sermon made the news on Instagram with a photo of Hurricane with the caption (in part):

“My heart has hardened today. One of my dearest friends… The mother of my eldest daughter passed away today #HURRICANEGLORIA is also a hip-hop icon in her own right. One of the first female rappers from Puerto Rico “She raps next to me.”

Hurricane’s cause of death is unclear. Puerto Rican singer known for her collaborations with artists such as Redman, Puff Daddy and others.

Hurricane G became famous with her debut album All Woman.

Storm G is a rapper from Brooklyn. She is of Puerto Rican descent and has a multilingual approach to her music, with most of her songs written in English and Spanish. When giving Spanish lyrics, she raps with a New York accent, a type of Spanish accent common to Puerto Ricans. It’s hard for Spanish speakers to recognize her as a Puerto Rican New Yorker. Rapper whose real name is Gloria Rodriguez is the first female member of Def Squad. Erick Sermon, Keith Murray and Redman are other members of the East Coast hip-hop group.

Storm cited hip-hop trio EPMD as a major influence on her work. She, like them, adopted a simple and direct style of rapping that did not make it difficult for listeners to skill. In 1994, she signed with Capitol Records, but due to a decrease in the number of publishers, she did not achieve the fame she expected.

Hurricane G didn’t have a record deal until 1997 when she rejoined New York’s HOLA Recordings. Her debut album, All Woman, was released under the title HOLA, but was not well received. In 2013, she collaborated with Thirstina Howl III in Mami & Papa.
