Rucker previously spoke about his struggles with drugs and alcohol early in his career. In 2013, he told the Los Angeles Times, “Doing drugs and drinking every night, I’ve done it. Believe me, I’ve done enough for everyone. And that’s not how I want to live anymore.”
Darius Rucker talks about Hootie & the Blowfish and why Charleston is so important to the band
During a recent interview with M/LUX, Darius Rucker talked about how important Charleston is to his group, Hootie & the Blowfish.
“One day I met a guy who said he played guitar and we started a band that became Hootie,” Rucker explained. “I’ve been a singer for 37 years and I’ve traveled all over the world and seen a lot of great, wonderful places, but Charleston is where it all started.”
Darius Rucker also said inspiration is all over Charleston. “It’s a great city to walk around in,” he noted. “You go out and walk downtown and see so many things that inspired me.”
Rucker also previously spoke to the Charleston City Paper about his love for the city. “I feel about Charleston the same way Springsteen felt about New Jersey,” she said. “I don’t think he’s ever sat down and said, ‘I’m going to let everyone know I’m from Jersey.’ But it happens when you sing about where you’re from and who you are.”
Darius Rucker then said that Charleston is very rooted in his music and who he is. “He’s a big part of me.”
His love for Charleston runs so deep that he titled his contemporary album County, Charleston, South Carolina 1966. “I knew that one day I was going to name one of my records for Charleston.”
