Haywood Highsmith’s career
One of the Miami Heat’s few untrained players is Haywood Highsmith. Highsmith regularly featured in the Heat rotation this year, but played little in the post-season.
The 26-year-old striker signed a 10-day contract with the Miami Heat two months after the 2021-22 season. He returned to the NBA G League with the Delaware Blue Coats after not being offered a new contract. Two months later, Heat called back and he agreed to two 10-day contracts.
The Heat rewarded him after his good performance by converting his contract to a regular one. He then agreed to a three-year, $3,945,742 contract with a team option of $1,902,137.
Haywood Highsmith is the 13th highest-paid player for the Miami Heat this season with an annual salary of $1,752,638. Highsmith is the 422nd highest paid player in the NBA this year.
This season, the Heat’s Wheeling production has started 11 of the team’s 54 games. He averaged 4.4 points and 3.5 rebounds in 17.9 minutes per game. The Heat will have until July 15 to make a guaranteed deal if they decide to bring him back for next season.
Haywood Highsmith is an unknown high school athlete at Baltimore’s Archbishop Curley School. Highsmith decided to play for Wheeling, a Division II team in West Virginia, as he had not received any offers from Division I organizations.
Highsmith announced his entry into the 2018 NBA Draft after four seasons with the Jesuit Cardinals. However, he was not selected and later agreed to play for the NBA G League’s Delaware Blue Coats. That 2018/19 season, the Philadelphia 76ers approached him and offered to sign both sides.
Highsmith scored three points in five minutes on his NBA debut in a 132-115 win over the Washington Wizards. He played five times for the Sixers before ending the season with the Blue Coats.
The Baltimore native has played for the Blue Coats for most of his career, except for a brief stint abroad with the Crailsheim Merlins in Germany. At the start of the 2021/2022 season, after his second stint with the Blue Coats, the Miami Heat signed him to a 10-day contract.
