Green Day rocked 2024 by performing at tonight’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, and the internet had the time of their lives. Images of the electric performance were shared on social networks.
Both Millennials and Generation X were pleased to see the ’90s pop-punk act appear. “I’m glad it was a band. I knew who they were,” said one bemused viewer. noted on X (formerly Twitter). “Green day?! Finally one I know!” another viewer agreed.
Many fans were surprised by how well Green Day has aged. “Ok, I still have a lot of enthusiasm for Green Day. “They’ve aged well to be honest!” one viewer noted in X. “As #Billie Joe Armstrong He looks like he hasn’t aged a day in 30 years?!? Another fan marveled.
“Yeah, something for the millennials!” gushed another fan. However, being a Millennial isn’t as fun as it used to be… “Me in the living room dancing to Green Day, playing American Idiot on New Year’s Eve like it’s 2004 again,” wrote one viewer alongside a GIF of a dancing grandmother.

Of course, not everyone was excited about Green Day’s New Year’s performance. The band altered the lyrics of their 2004 hit, “American Idiot,” to reflect the current political climate. At one point in the song, the lyrics traditionally say: “…it’s not part of the southern agenda…”. However, Billy Joe Armstong crooned, “…not part of the MAGA agenda…” during tonight’s performance. This sent certain corners of the internet into a pearl-clutching craze.
“Is there a band dumber than Green Day?” lamented an X user nicknamed Anti-Taxxer. “Exhausted,” agreed another X user. “I just lost all respect for Green Day,” said another Tweet. One viewer even hinted that they were going to boycott the band. “So @Green Day I just said (sing) that they are not “part of the #MAGA agenda.” Adjust your playlists accordingly,” they wrote.
However, one Green Day fan pointed out that the outrage may be a little late. The lyrics have been like this for several years. “Green Day made the lyric change in 2019. I’m glad to see they kept the change.” they wrote. Another fan noted that the change may have been made even earlier. “In fact, they made the change in 2016 when they launched Radio Revolution,” they wrote. “They said it on the Howard Stern Show in October 2016 when they were promoting it before going on tour.”
