Aubrey Drake Graham is one of the most famous and influential people in music right now. He began his career as an entertainer on television before turning to music. Lil Wayne saw promise in Drake after he released several mixtapes and signed him to Young Money Entertainment in June 2009.
Lil Wayne predicted that Drake would eventually be bigger than him, and his prediction turned out to be true. Drake has broken streaming, chart and music sales records since he released his debut album a decade ago.
Drake’s parents, Dennis and Sandi Graham, have figured prominently in his life, and he rarely shies away from talking about them.
Drake learned from his father how not to treat women
Dennis Graham came from a Memphis family of musicians. His uncle was a music producer who worked with the legendary Al Green, and his cousin, Teenie Hodges, became a guitarist and songwriter. Graham taught himself to play guitar, piano, and drums. He grew up listening to his mother’s favorite singers such as BB King, Sam Cooke and Bobby Bland.
Graham played drums for various bands, and in his late teens, he played with Jerry Lee Lewis. In a time of contrasting fortunes, Lewis’s drummer walked into a store across the street from a Memphis club and robbed the store keeper. He was now a fugitive and, in his recklessness, he offered Graham the chance to work with Jerry Lewis.
Dennis then moved to Toronto and met Sandi at a nightclub called Club Bluenote. The two hit it off and on October 24, 1986 Drake was born. Five years later, Dennis and Sandi have broken up. He returned to Memphis, but made an effort to stay in Drake’s life. Dennis took Drake from Toronto to Memphis to spend time with his family. He said XXL:
“I would tear it down every year. We used to drive from Toronto to Memphis every summer. From when he was a baby in the car seat until he was 17 years old. We lived in a section of Memphis called White Haven, and that’s where he spent his summers. And it’s the hood.
Drake benefited musically from his trips to Memphis, and also learned from his father’s relationship with Sandi about how not to treat women. He said elle:
“What not to do. Ways I never want to make a woman feel. I was there when my mom got mad about the things my dad did. In a rare moment of self-actualization, my dad confirmed that I should treat women better. ” .
Drake’s mother inspired him to embrace his creativity.
When he wasn’t in Memphis dating musicians, Drake was looking for ways to help his mother in Toronto financially. Drake and his Jewish mother initially lived on Weston Road before moving to more affluent Forest Hill when he was in the sixth grade. The new surroundings gave the illusion of a wealthy family, but it was not.
Drake went to school with students who came from families much wealthier than his own. However, he benefited because one of his friends helped him land a role in the Canadian teen drama. Degrassi: The Next Generation. The concert helped because her mother was sick and struggling to support the family. Sandi recognized Drake’s promise as an artist and encouraged him to keep going. drake said the hollywood reporter:
“My mother is an incredible woman. She never necessarily implemented anything. She would always tell me, ‘You know, whatever you want to do, whatever you end up being, I’ll always love you. I will always support you'”.
Thanks to his mother’s support, Drake survived and is now living the good life in Los Angeles thanks to his son.
Drake regularly incorporates his experiences with his parents into his music.
When Drake was a child, he told his father that he wanted to make music. He bet his father five dollars that he would make more music and appear in more movies than his father. In 2009, Dennis paid. Part of the reason people love Drake’s music is that he discovers his soul in his lyrics. He talks about his struggles growing up, his relationships, and his parents. dennis spoke with Billboard on Drake addressing his father-son relationship in his songs:
“It was good to hear some things. We had a discussion about some of the things that were said and all is well. Because I know why he was doing it. He explained to me why, so it all worked out.”
Sandi appears in Drake’s music much more than Dennis. On his third mixtape, until now, Drake opened up about Sandi’s attempt to run away from home and how he convinced her to stay. Drake spoke with mtv on his family situation while recording the mixtape:
“So my mother was going through a difficult time. And yeah, man, one night she just broke down and tried to run away from the house, she tried to leave everything behind… I saw her around, and she started crying right away when she saw me… My dad didn’t . stay with us, so it had to be security for her and let her know that everything was going to be okay.”
