Geeta Gopinath was born on Wednesday, 8 December 1971 (age 52 years; as in 2023) in Kolkata, India. She completed her schooling from Nirmala Convent School, Mysore. In 1992, she obtained her BA in Economics from Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi University, and in 1994, she obtained her MA in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University. Later, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Washington in 1996. In 2001, Geeta did her PhD in Economics from Princeton University. In July 2018, Geeta was invited for an interview for Chief Economist at the IMF, she passed the interview and was appointed as the Chief Economist of the IMF. Geeta was the first Indian woman to be selected as the IMF’s Chief Economist, and is also the first Director of the IMF’s Research Department and an economic advisor to the Fund.

Geeta’s husband’s name is Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal. He is the Global Executive Director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Iqbal and Geeta were classmates in Delhi University. Geeta and Iqbal got engaged in 1997 and got married in 1999. During their college studies, both of them prepared for UPSC exam. Iqbal passed the examination as a first rank holder in 1995 and became an IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, and he served as an IAS officer for 5 years after which he left his job and moved to the United States with Geeta. , where they blessed with a son, Rahil Singh Dhaliwal.

She joined Harvard University as the John Zwanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics. For a few years, Geeta was on public service leave from the Department of Economics to work as the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She is the third woman and second Indian to become a permanent member of the economics department at Harvard.

In July 2018, Gita Gopinath was invited to interview for Chief Economist at the IMF. He passed his interview and was appointed Chief Economist of the IMF. Geeta is the first Indian American woman to be selected as the Chief Economist at the IMF. He worked as the Fund’s Economic Counselor and Director of its Research Department for 3 years and later, he was promoted to First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF, the second position in the organization.
In addition, Geeta Gopinath is also the Co-Director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Earlier, Geeta Gopinath served as a member of the Economic Advisory Panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and an economic advisor to Pinarayi Vijayan, the Chief Minister of Kerala (India).
