Gaurav Chakraborty is an Indian actor and editor who predominantly works in Bengali films and television shows. He is best known for playing the role of Byomkesh Bakshi in the Bengali TV show ‘Byomkesh’ (2014).

Gaurav Chakraborty was born on Monday, 6 March 1989 (age 33 years; as in 2022) in Kolkata. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He did his schooling from The Assembly of God Church School, Kolkata. In 2005, he joined St. Xavier’s College to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication and Video Production. For his master’s degree, he went to the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, where he completed a postgraduate course in video editing.

I don’t feel pressured by my parents. Not even my younger brother Arjun. My father is quiet but gives suggestions when asked. Mother is very encouraging and appreciative of him. After graduation, I did a little theater in our home group Charkabak but working with my father made my knees wobble. I admire my brother’s work a lot. We have a great relationship and love to bask in each other’s glory. There is no sense of competition.”

He was part of the theater group Charbak, where he not only assisted in backstage work, but also played the role of Topshe in the play Apsara Theatre-er Mamla. After a few years, Ganer Opare happened. My character was supposed to last for three months but the tremendous popularity of the serial extended my role till the end. I think Gaaner Opare was the biggest hit on Bengali satellite channels, but the producers refused to take it forward and it was the right thing to do.”

His next successful TV show was Byomkesh (2011), which aired on Colors Bangla in which he played the lead role of Byomkesh.

I played Arko, a direction student at SRFTI, who goes to Germany with Subir Banerjee, the actor who played Apu in Ray’s Pather Panchali. We represent the present. The film goes back in time to highlight the story of young Subir, who was neither seen nor heard of after Pather Panchali. A fictional story, it focuses on the tragedy of the child actors who disappeared. Ardhendu Banerjee, who played the role of elder Subir, and I developed a wonderful bond. He is not only a great actor but also an educationist who retired from IAS a few years ago.

He has worked in several other Bengali films including Highway (2014), Agun (2014), Fakebook (2015), Gangster (2016), Double Feluda (2018), and Abar Kanchenjunga (2022). In an interview he talked about playing different roles in films and said,

Kaushik Ganguly has given me the biggest scope. He gave me a break in Baghnoh, followed by Rang Milanti, a frothy, youth-centric love story, and then Laptop and now a very different role in Apur Panchali. My role in Atanu Ghosh’s Roopkatha Noy was that of a newly married husband who tries to deal with his forever-runaway bride. In Harnath Chakraborty’s Chhayamoy, I play the sixth generation of a royal family. Aashbo R One Day directed by Abhijeet Dasgupta was a different kind of tea. Every director brings a different learning experience and I feel fortunate to be able to learn from them.
