Farooq Ahmed Dar, better known by his pseudonym Bitta Karate, is an Indian terrorist. He is accused of holding Pakistani citizenship. Farooq is the chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), a terrorist separatist organization active in the regions of Kashmir (as of 2022). He is infamous for the killing of Kashmiri Hindus during the ethnic cleansing in 1990.

Farooq Ahmed Dar was born on Monday, 1 January 1973 (age 49 years; as of 2022) in Guru Bazaar (neighborhood of Srinagar city), Kashmir Valley. Their zodiac sign is Capricorn. Growing up, he learned martial arts and achieved proficiency in it within a few years. Initially, he worked for his family business and when he was 20, Dar left his home to receive armed training in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Farooq Ahmed Dar first met Asba Arzumand Khan in 2008 at a friend’s house. Soon, Farooq proposes to Asbah and after initial hesitation she agrees. They dated each other for about one and a half years and then decided to get married. Asbah’s parents initially opposed their relationship because they did not want their daughter to marry a former terrorist. However, after much persuasion from Asbah, Farooq and his (Farooq) family, his parents agreed. Talking about Farooq during an interview, Asbah said,

In most of the families of the valley, you will find such examples where one son is a militant and the other son works in the government. Marrying a former militant is not a surprise to me at all. My family had initial objections to this marriage which was legal. The main point of attraction between me and Farooq was that we belonged to the same community. I like Farooq’s decision-making abilities.”

Frustrated with the administration in Kashmir Valley, Farooq set out on the path of terrorism at the age of just 20. In 1988, he was selected by then JKLF chief Commander Ashfaq Majeed Wani to receive 32-day armed training at a state-sponsored Pakistani terrorist training camp. Dar, along with other trainees, was blindfolded and taken across the Line of Control to Pakistan-administered Kashmir, where a training camp was set up.

After returning from arms training in Pakistan-administered Kashmir in the 1990s, Farooq Ahmed Dar unleashed a wave of violence on the streets of Srinagar. He walked the streets armed with weapons in search of Kashmiri Pandits and shot them with his pistol wherever he saw them. Apparently, he received the hanging order from his superior in the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, Ashfaq Majeed Wani. Bitta is accused of killing around 20 people, most of whom were Kashmiri Pandits. During the 1990 exodus, Kashmiri Pandits were asked to choose between “Raliv, Gaaliv or Chaliv” (convert, die or leave). Many of them were killed in militancy and thousands of Pandit families fled Kashmir during the 1990 insurgency. While he used pistols to kill civilians, Bitta used an AK-47 to attack Indian security forces. In an interview, Dr. Agnishekhar, convenor of Panun Kashmir, an organization of expatriate Kashmiri Pandits, criticized the state (Jammu and Kashmir) administration for releasing Bitta even after announcing the killing of 42 Hindus. He said,

It is shocking for us that a person who had publicly announced the killing of 42 Kashmiri Pandits has gone free. It is also an irony that Afzal Guru was sentenced to death in the Parliament attack case, even though he was not personally present there, yet the man who confessed to killing the Pandits went free. Is.”

Furthermore, Agnishekhar said that Kashmiri Pandits had become angry due to the failure of the state (Jammu and Kashmir) to punish Bitta for his crimes.

Kashmiri Pandit Sabha president TN Khosa also questioned the ability of the state (Jammu and Kashmir) to prosecute Farooq, who was responsible for the killings of Pandits in the 1990s. He said,

It is extremely regrettable that the State Government did not take steps to prosecute the person responsible for the murder of the Pandits. I can only pray for those at the top and advise them not to play with the sentiments of Kashmiri Pandits.

Reportedly, the targeted killings of Kashmiri Pandits started right after the kidnapping of Rubaiya, daughter of then Union Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, in January 1990 and ended with the release of some dreaded terrorists. Farooq led the escape and was the main attacker of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) until his arrest in June 1990.

Farooq Ahmed Dar’s first victim during the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990 was his childhood friend Satish Kumar Tikku (businessman). Dar shot him dead right in front of his (Satish) house. In an interview, Farooq reveals that he murdered Satish because he was ordered to do so. He said that Satish was murdered because he belonged to a Kashmiri Pandit family and was a follower of RSS.

Conviction and arrest

During an interview, Farooq admitted to killing about 20 people (most of whom were Kashmiri Pandits) in Kashmir during the insurgency in 1990. However, he later claimed that he did not kill anyone, and that he had given the earlier statement under duress. On June 22, 1990, Farooq along with two of his associates were arrested by the Border Security Force from Srinagar. There were around 19 terrorism-related cases against him and he was detained under the Public Safety Act in various jails across India. He was kept in official custody in Kot Bhalwal Jail of Jammu, District Jail of Kathua, Central Jail of Jodhpur and Central Jail of Agra. Dar remained in custody for about 16 years.

Farooq was granted bail for four months by a court implementing the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA court) in Jammu on 23 October 2006. He was handed over to his family on 25 October 2006. He was granted bail on a surety bond and a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh. Later, the Supreme Court of India canceled his detention under the Public Safety Act. While delivering the verdict, Justice Wani remarked,

The court is aware of the fact that the charges against the accused are of serious nature and carry a punishment of death penalty or life imprisonment, but the fact remains that the prosecution has shown complete disinterest in arguing the case.

Following the court’s decision, Dar was released after spending 16 years in jail. While his release was condemned by many Kashmiri Pandit organizations, Farooq was given a warm welcome by his supporters in Kashmir. He was brought by the JKLF in a procession to Guru Bazaar area of ​​Kashmir, where a large number of supporters gathered near his house and showered him with flower petals and confetti. Dar addressed his supporters and visited Eidgah to pay homage to his militant colleagues killed by security forces in 1990.

After his release from detention in 2006, Dar joined the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front and later became president of the group.

Arrested on terrorism financing charges

In 2019, Bitta was again arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on terror funding charges. The NIA accused Farooq and other accused of “conspiring to wage war against the government” and creating trouble in the Kashmir Valley. As of 2022, he is in the official custody of the National Investigation Agency.
