News Eli Steele
While in town on Wednesday filming a documentary, vandals broke into their car and stole about $30,000 worth of video equipment, giving conservative author Shelby Steele and his director son Eli a warm welcome.
Eli testified that they left the rented SUV there for only ten minutes before returning around 11 a.m. to find three windows broken and their belongings taken.
“You hear about San Francisco and how terrible it is. My SUV was broken into while I was filming my father, Shelby Steele, and over $15,000 worth of cameras were taken, the younger Steele tweeted along with photos of broken windows.
He then claimed that in addition to the damage to the rental car, accessories worth between $25,000 and $30,000 were stolen.
“I called 911 and they hung up twice,” he wrote. “SF police are not active. It was horrible when my friend asked gang members for help.
He claimed that while they were assessing the damage, they noticed more alleged criminals arriving in a Mercedes and looking at parked cars. We shouted at them. They shot my friend Eli tweeted. He is currently submitting his report. There are no police.
Hours later, the documentary maker released an update from the police station, asserting that everyone present was there because their cars had been broken into.
According to Eli, the father and son team reported the incident to a police officer who took all of their information and advised them not to expect any results from the report because the San Francisco Police Department “fired up”. The owner of the site, Elon Musk, took an interest in the topic on Twitter.
Musk responded to the post by saying that “many Twitter employees felt unsafe coming to work in downtown SF and they had their car windows broken.” “They also get such a bad response from the police that they no longer bother to report the crime.” But when do we hit the tipping point and claim the services our tax dollars support? he asks.
Over the past few months, car thefts and break-ins have become increasingly common in San Francisco, forcing many high-end stores to either lock up inventory or leave the city altogether.
