Dr. Ashok was born in Jalandhar, Punjab. He studied from DR Jain National High School, Jalandhar Cantt. He holds LLB degrees from University Regional Campus, Jalandhar and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Later, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Atal Bihari Vajpayee University, Chhattisgarh.

academic career
In 2001, he started an affiliated college, Lovely Institute of Management. This affiliation created many problems in the way Ashoka imparted education to the students. In 2005, he received approval from the Government of Punjab to start a private university, Lovely Professional University. In an interview, Dr. Ashok talked about how he worked towards keeping the motto of LPU alive and said,
Unlike other traditional universities, LPU was started with the aim of preparing students for industry. Great importance was given to develop such human resources who are ready to take up the industry and can also play their role in the development of the society and the country. This gave way to LPU’s tagline – “Transforming Education, Transforming India”. LPU is a multi-disciplinary university, which makes a student’s experience more rewarding than an institution with a limited number of subjects.”

On 21 March 2022, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). On 24 March 2022, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Facts/General Knowledge
- In 1991 he started automobile business and started a dealership with Bajaj and in 1996 he started a dealership with Maruti.
- Dr. Ashok always had an interest in academics and in an interview he said that he pursued a career in academics because he wanted to make some changes in the education system.
- Dr. Ashok’s father established a sweet shop business, which was later taken over by his brothers, who had to leave their studies to take care of the business. Dr. Ashok did not leave his studies and completed his graduation. He worked at a shop during the day and went to college in the evening.
- In 2019, LPU was the first private university visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Many famous personalities and Presidents and Prime Ministers of other countries have also visited LPU.
