The Disney World Premiere The little Mermaid The live action remake has just taken place and the first critical reactions have been revealed.
Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy walked the red carpet for the event on Monday night (May 8) at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
They were joined by co-stars Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Javier Bardem, Noma Dumezweni and Art Malik, as well as director Rob Marshall and original Ariel actress Jodi Benson, among others.
The little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and energetic young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. Ariel, the youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, longs to know more about the world beyond the sea, and as she visits the surface, she falls in love with the handsome Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the wicked sea witch, Ursula, that gives her the chance to experience life on land, but ultimately puts her life and her father’s crown in jeopardy.
The film will open in theaters on May 26.
FYI: Halle is wearing a Valdrin Sahiti dress. Javier is wearing Zegna. Jacob is using Reiss.

#The little Mermaid makes it pretty close to being Disney’s best live-action movie, however, it still struggles in the villain department. Halle Bailey ES Ariel and I literally got goosebumps during her performance. This is a little mermaid retelling like you’ve never seen her before. pic.twitter.com/JjtLOR61vL

from Disney #The little Mermaid It is definitely one of the best live action adaptations. Halle Bailey pours incredible emotion into Ariel and it gave me chills to watch her, as Melissa McCarthy’s Ursula and Daveed Diggs’ Sebastian steal scenes all day. pic.twitter.com/DHhIkbIj8s

#The little Mermaid is a live-action remake that retains the heart and soul of the story we know and love, and is further elevated by the impeccable performance of Halle Bailey, who plays the star: Born to be on the big screen and that’s why this new take is worth seeing. pic.twitter.com/Tcewp2L4MY

It may seem visually harsh under the sea, but THE LITTLE MERMAID finally recreates some of the magic of the original through its timeless story and cast. Daveed Diggs and Melissa McCarthy stand out, but Halle Bailey is the one who wows with her beautiful singing and her empathetic charm. pic.twitter.com/DhmmtOLaLJ

It is very simple. are you excited about #The little Mermaid? It will like you. It’s exactly what you think it is. Are you skeptical and are you worried? That is valid too. It looks weird and disjointed. Bailey is great, McCarthy rules, the songs work but she feels so unnecessary. pic.twitter.com/n4qp7MsVFH

Endearing but uneven, #The little Mermaid It doesn’t offer the magic of the animated classic, but there are plenty of creative Rob Marshall touches to float audience boats. Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy are great. Daveed Diggs and Awkwafina provide some solid comic relief. pic.twitter.com/kt1pVURZiL

#The little Mermaid: Charming, but unbelievably irregular. Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem poured their hearts and souls into a film that can’t escape its animated legacy. Best when it leans towards cutesy whimsy, but limits its fantasy elements for no reason. pic.twitter.com/c7Bt2BO5rq
