Mahesh Baghel was born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. As per one source, he was born on Sunday, 15 December 1957 (age 65 years; as of 2022), and as per another source, he was born on Wednesday, 23 July 1958 (age 65 years; as of 2023). He belongs to Cheet village in the Kheragarh block of Agra. He later pursued graduation in law and became an advocate.

He practised in Agra Civil Court, specialising in matters related to bounced cheques, divorce, family matters, criminal, and accident claims. He later became the President of the Greater Agra Bar Council.

- In November 2014, he received a threatening letter that contained death threats to him and his family.
- In August 2023, he became viral when he was declared dead by the doctors at Pushpanjali Hospital & Research Centre, Agra; however, when his family members brought him home, he opened his eyes and moved his body a little bit. His family members took him to Ramved Hospital in New Agra where his condition became stable.
