Dipa Karmakar is an Indian artistic gymnast. She came into limelight after winning a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She is a recipient of the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award. He was also awarded the Arjuna Award in 2015 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2016 for his contribution to sports.

Deepa Karmakar was born on 9 August 1993 (age 30 years; as in 2023) in Agartala. His zodiac sign is Leo. She did her schooling from Abhoyanagar Nazrul Smriti Vidyalaya, Agartala and went to Women’s College to pursue her graduation in Bachelor of Arts. Deepa started practicing gymnastics at the age of just 6 years. When she started gymnastics, she had flat feet and initially felt hesitant in doing so, but it was her father who inspired her to take up the sport and pursue it. Her father worked as a weightlifting coach in the Sports Authority of India and wanted Dipa to make a name for herself in the field of sports. He took his training from coach Bisweshwar Nandi. Karmakar trained without any equipment for eight months before participating in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. However, the situation changed after the federation arranged a training camp for him. Later, GoSports Foundation supported her to pursue a career in gymnastics.

Dipa started her career as a gymnast by competing in the National Games of India in 2011, representing Tripura. Subsequently, she competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and won a bronze medal in the women’s vault final. Karmakar was honored by Sachin Tendulkar at the CWG felicitation ceremony. She remained consistent in her performances at various events and competitions. Karmakar won the bronze medal again at the Asian Gymnastic Championships and then the World Artistic Gymnastic Championships. After this, she went for the Rio Olympics trials and after clearing it, she received ₹30 lakh from the Sports Ministry under the Target Olympic Scheme (TOPS) for training. In 2016, she qualified for the finals at the Rio Olympics and paved the way for Indian youth to take up gymnastics as their career. In a career spanning 9 years, Karmakar has earned a total of 77 medals in state, national and world championships, of which 67 are gold. Dipa Produnova (difficulty level 7) is one of only 5 women to perform the vault. He has also made the highest record score of 15.100 in the competition.

Controversy

On 5 February 2023, he was given a 21-month ban for failing a dope test and all his results since 11 October 2021 were disqualified.

  • Surprisingly, she was not the first choice of the Indian Olympic team to compete in the Rio Olympics as she failed to book a place for herself in the Olympics. The selection was done through the World Championships in which she could not reach the podium and could not get any medal in the competition.
