In his book “Credible: Why We Doubt Accusers and Protect Abusers,” Tuerkheimer examines the function credibility serves in both the legal system and popular culture.

When abuse victims, especially marginalised victims, come forward with an allegation, Tuerkheimer said, “I talk about what I call ‘credibility discounting,’ which is what often happens and the ways in which our culture and our law are primed to devalue the word of that person.”

As an alternative, she refers to “credibility inflation” as the faith placed on societal elites. Credibility discounting and credibility inflation work together to produce what Tuerkheimer calls the “credibility complex,” which is society’s propensity to distrust abuse survivors and trust their perpetrators, who are frequently powerful men.

She claimed that the credibility complex causes survivors great suffering. According to Tuerkheimer, “it means that most of the time abuse allegations aren’t investigated, and the status quo is maintained.”

The main objective of “Credible” is cultural change. It draws attention to the ways people frequently dismiss the accounts of survivors and provides suggestions for how to stop this custom.

Tuerkheimer emphasised the value of reorienting how individuals react to one another’s tales. According to her, these casual exchanges can foster a culture in which survivors are not held accountable or ignored.

The Centre for Awareness, Response, and Education at Northwestern University acts as a private resource for survivors on campus. Carrie Wachter, the director of CARE, urged students to listen to their peers’ tales with understanding.

Tuerkheimer claimed that her job as a former prosecutor handling special victims cases gave her the inspiration to create this book at a time when the #MeToo movement had brought debates about sexual assault to the fore. She claimed that although our society was becoming more aware of abuse reports, it was still unsure of how to react to them.

Tuerkheimer wants to change the way that people talk about sexual assault and harassment and foster a climate where victims are believed. She talked to a lot of survivors to include their perspectives in her book. Tuerkheimer observed a pattern in these dialogues regarding the effect of credibility on survivors.

Because of the various ways in which credibility discounting can occur, the effects of abuse can be just as bad as or even worse than the actual abuse.

That is what, according to Yuracko, “really makes the book resonate.” There are numerous accounts, all of which are unique, but a common element among them is the suffering brought on by the undervaluation of women’s speech.

According to Tuerkheimer, she wants her book to bring about change. She urged revising civil and criminal law, claiming that credibility discounting is ingrained in both.

Pritzker Prof. Juliet Sorensen, who specialises in human rights and international criminal law, recently instructed a course on rape as a weapon of war.

I hope that “Credible” will be read by international tribunals as well as local courts, and that it will cause them to reevaluate how they regard victims who are giving testimony about abuse and wrongdoing that they have witnessed. Sorensen
