Dan Rapoport, a Latvian-American businessman, was found dead in Washington DC on August 14 after allegedly committing suicide from a skyscraper. Rapoport, living in exile in the United States, is a prominent opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin. His body was found on the sidewalk in front of the 2400 M Apartments in the Georgetown neighborhood, where he is presumed dead in a free fall. Officials from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a “bridge jumper” at 6pm on Sunday. After the fall, Rapoport was taken to the hospital, where his death was confirmed.
A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police, Brianna Burch, told The Independent that foul play is not suspected at this time and a medical examination is pending. A damaged smartphone, headset, glasses, driver’s license and $2,620 in cash were found at the scene.

Dan Rapoport’s wife, Alena Rapoport, believes her husband did not commit suicide.
Yuniya Pugacheva, former editor of the Russian-language Tatler magazine, announced the news of Dan Rapoport’s death on Telegram. Pugačova said a farewell letter attached to his beloved dog was discovered in a local park after the fall of Rapoport. The former Tatler editor also claims to have seen Rapoport in a London pub in May. Pugačeva also testified that Rapoport’s wife had left him at the time.
Alena Rapoport, Dan Rapoport’s widow, has denied the above claims, telling Russian business news channel RBC that she doesn’t think her husband committed suicide:
“No messages, no suicides, no trips to London or departures.”
What does Dan Rapoport represent?
Dan Rapoport, 52, is a Moscow businessman, best known as an investment banker and nightclub owner. In 2012, he was deported from Russia. The late billionaire was the owner of the Soho Rooms nightclub in Moscow. Rapoport lived in Kiev, Ukraine, with his wife Alena and their children from 2016 to early 2022. However, during the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the investor moved his Ukrainian daughter and wife to Denmark before returning to Washington, DC. Alena Rapoport, his widow, told RBC that after evacuating his wife and children, Rapoport returned to Ukraine to support the nation. She added that they plan to meet later in the United States.
Criticize Vladimir Putin
Rapoport is said to have been forced out of Moscow in 2012 for supporting Putin’s most prominent rival and opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Although some media first covered it, most such contributions appear to have since been deleted. Rapoport has been vocal in his criticism of the Russian Kremlin. According to the Moscow Post, he may also be linked to the Alfa Group, which was previously associated with Navalny.
Rapoport founded his own fund, Rapoport Capital, after fleeing Russia, where he worked as the director of a fundraising consulting firm. At the same time, he is a Startup Advisor at Newchip Accelerator. Dan Rapoport and his first wife returned to the United States and stayed for four years. Rapoport decided to live with his second wife Alena in Kiev, Ukraine after their divorce in 2016. The billionaire sold his house to Ivanka and Jared Trump in early 2017, explaining why he had to choose a luxury apartment when he returned to the US earlier.
