Causeway will finally be available on Apple TV+ on Friday, November 4, 2022, at 12:01 AM ET. Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry star in the psychological thriller, with the former playing an injured soldier and the latter as a car mechanic. According to the Apple TV+ website, Causeway is about “a soldier who has to adjust to his life after returning home to New Orleans”. The film had its global premiere on September 10, 2022 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Almost a month later, on October 8, Causeway was screened at the BFI London Film Festival. A trailer for the film, which premiered last month, shows distraught Lynsey (played by Lawrence) trying to get back to life at her New Orleans home. Some of her scenes effectively show her pent-up rage. Among them, she fidgets while lying in bed or basking in the sun while riding a bus, and they are especially conspicuous in situations where she swears after driving. Her frustrations and problems were exacerbated by her brother’s addiction and her mother’s addiction to alcohol.
Despite the fact that the film’s synopsis claims that Lynsey was sent to Afghanistan and suffered brain damage, viewers do not witness this in the trailer. However, the short does imply that her relationship with James (played by Brian Tyree Henry) might be the treatment she needs. It’s worth reiterating that Lynsey isn’t the only one going through tough times in her life; James is also going through difficulties. How did the movie go?
Rotten Tomatoes gives the 92-minute film an 88% positive rating based on 44 reviews. According to Empire Magazine’s John Nugent, the photo is “beautifully staged,” with Lawrence and Henry “playing a quiet but formidable storm.” However, he said the filming was “limited” and the lack of intensity in the story made us “want more”.
In terms of awards, Neugebauer’s Causeway won Best Debut Film at the Rome Film Festival. Meanwhile, Henry was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.
Apple TV+ at the Oscars
Experts believe Causeway, along with Emancipation, will be the Apple TV+ showcase for next year’s Oscars. The historical action film directed by Will Smith is based on the story of Gordon alias Whipped Peter, an escaped American slave. During the American Civil War, his scarred back became the most prominent symbol of the abolitionist struggle.
Emancipation is slated for release in December 2022. Meanwhile, Apple TV+ has seen Oscar glory. In 2022, their CODA shot won the Academy Award for Best Picture, making them the first streamer to win the coveted award at the event.
