Career

  • Gus and Susan Chelios reared their son Chelios, who was born on January 25, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois. They were Illinois residents of Evergreen Park. Before his family relocated to Poway, California, where he attended Mira Mesa High School, he attended Mount Carmel High School in Chicago.
  • Chelios was unable to play high school hockey in Southern California, therefore no American universities were interested in signing him. The lone NCAA Division I hockey club west of the Rockies, United States International University in San Diego, made him the sole scholarship offer.
  • Chelios, a freshman in 1979, quickly recognized he was in the wrong place as he faced larger opponents with far more junior hockey experience. He finally lost his spot on the team, and he thought about giving up hockey.
  • As an alternative, Chelios tried his luck in Canada, where he was twice cut by Junior B teams and reached a low point when he needed to borrow money from random people one year to travel back to California. They wouldn’t accept a youngster from the United States when they could have a local boy, he said, since “I wasn’t any larger or any better than the other men.”
  • Chelios joined the Montreal Canadiens permanently in 1984 and distinguished himself by his performance. He was dubbed “Soft Hands Chelios” by his teammates because of his attacking prowess in his early years. He was selected for the 1985 NHL All-Rookie Team and received a trip to the National Hockey League All-Star Game.
  • Even in the high-scoring 1980s, his 64 points in 74 games was a remarkable number for a defender, and he lost out to Mario Lemieux for the Calder Memorial Trophy. He scored 10 points in 9 postseason games that year, with a +17 plus/minus. Playing in front of Patrick Roy, the Conn Smythe Trophy-winning goalkeeper, he won his first Stanley Cup in 1985–86 despite only appearing in 41 games.
  • Chelios formally retired on August 31, 2010. Age-wise, he was 48. The same day, Chelios was recruited to work in the Red Wings front office, according to general manager of the Red Wings Ken Holland. He was appointed Adviser to Hockey Operations, and one of his responsibilities will be to work with the Red Wings’ defensive prospects in Grand Rapids.
  • Chelios’ appointment as an NHL commentator on FS1 and coverage of the 2014 Winter Olympics hockey competition were both announced in 2013.
  • For their analysis of the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, for which ESPN had acquired the U.S. broadcast rights after NBC withdrew due to scheduling issues, Chelios and former Red Wings teammate Brett Hull were added to ESPN’s roster of commentators in 2016.
