Charlie Monk, Country Radio Celebrity who was best known as the Mayor of Music Row in the Nashville music business, died on Monday, December 19, at the age of 84. The cause of death of the music producer, composer and radio personality is unknown. However, his family informed Variety that Monk died quietly at home.
Monk was inducted into the National Hall of Fame in 2019 and has hosted SiriusXM’s national channels, including Prime Country and Willie’s Roadhouse. Monk is known for his shameless sense of humor and harmless mockery of great musicians. Speaking to Country Aircheck 2019, Monk noted his extensive work experience,
“I’ve done many different professions – voice acting, acting, music, publishing and talent management. I’ve said so many untruths about my work that I don’t know what to focus on. any.”

Charlie Monk .’s Childhood and Career
Monk was born on October 29, 1938 in Geneva, Alabama and had a difficult upbringing. According to The Tennessean newspaper, as a young man, he worked as a poster affixing flyers on the windshields of the town’s cinemas. In high school, he mopped the floors at a small radio station in his hometown for $5 a week, after which he worked as a DJ. He went on to serve in the US Army, but it was short-lived as he soon became a DJ at radio station WTBF while attending Troy State University.
Charlie Monk married Royce in 1968 and moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee to program WMTS, one of Tennessee’s first permanent stations. He eventually reached out to Music Row, where he worked for the ASCAP royalty collection. During his career, he has sponsored many country musicians, including Randy Travis and Kenny Chesney. In 1969, he also helped start the National Radio Workshop. Monk helped launch the careers of country artists like Garth Brooks and Dolly Parton.
In 2020, he told The Tennesseeer:
“I’ve helped many people achieve their goals. I’ve realized that I’m better off praising others than praising myself. I’ve finally accepted the fact that I’m not a superstar. I’ve become a superstar. The greatest Charlie Monk ever. It’s amazing. That’s exactly how I feel.”

Monk has been inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame, and the University of Alabama Media and Information Science Hall of Fame, in addition to the National Radio Hall of Fame. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame. A street in his hometown is named “Charlie Monk Lane” in his honor.
Monk has received a number of awards, including the CLIO Award for Commercial Voiceover, the Addy Award, and recognition from the Mobile Press Registry, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and the Association Nashville Talent Directors Association. He also received the CMA’s Joe Talbot Award for “outstanding leadership and commitment to preserving and promoting the values and traditions of country music” in 2021.
