Charlie Monk Passed Away At The Age Of 84

Charlie Monk, Country Radio Celebrity who was best known as the Mayor of Music Row in the Nashville music business, died on Monday, December 19, at the age of 84. Charlie Monk .’s Childhood and Career

Monk was born on October 29, 1938 in Geneva, Alabama and had a difficult upbringing. According to The Tennessean newspaper, as a young man, he worked as a poster affixing flyers on the windshields of the town’s cinemas. In high school, he mopped the floors at a small radio station in his hometown for $5 a week, after which he worked as a DJ. He went on to serve in the US Army, but it was short-lived as he soon became a DJ at radio station WTBF while attending Troy State University.

Charlie Monk married Royce in 1968 and moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee to program WMTS, one of Tennessee’s first permanent stations. He eventually reached out to Music Row, where he worked for the ASCAP royalty collection. During his career, he has sponsored many country musicians, including Randy Travis and Kenny Chesney. In 1969, he also helped start the National Radio Workshop. Monk helped launch the careers of country artists like Garth Brooks and Dolly Parton.
