Svika Pick, singer, songwriter, composer and television personality, died on August 14, 2022 at the age of 72. The cause of death has not been announced, but it is thought to have been due to age-related illness or natural causes. Pick suffered a stroke in 2018 that affected his speech and mobility. Although his health improved, he no longer performed or wrote as before. President Isaac Herzog said that Svika has brought fresh energy and a powerful transformation to Israel’s cultural scene. He said Pick’s song touched people’s hearts and became an important part of people’s lives.
Svika Pick’s life and work
Pick was born into a Jewish family on October 3, 1949. His grandfather was the director of a music school and his uncle taught music. He started teaching classical music when he was 5 years old. The Pick family moved to Israel in 1957, and after studying music at the Ramat Gan Conservatory, he began playing with local rock bands. He was a popular pop singer in Israel during the 1970s and appeared in the Hebrew adaptation of the musical Hair in the same year.
Pick began composing music in 1998, and Diva was written in collaboration with writer Yoav Ginai. In 2002, the group reunited and produced the song Light a Candle for Sarit Hadad, Israel’s representative at Eurovision 2002. He also wrote songs for Oleksandr Ponomaryov and Angelica Agurbashin, both Eurovision contestants. In 2003, he wrote Hasta la Vista for Ponomaryov and another song for Agurbash. From 2005 to 2009, Svika Pick was a judge on the singing reality show Kokhav Nolad. In 2005, he starred in Bipo’s reality documentary show HaMaestro. In 2009, the late musician appeared as a guest on an episode of Tamid Oto Chaloma, whose songs were used as the film’s title and soundtrack.
