In the Saturday (November 11) edition of Maria Shriver’s Sunday NewspaperEmma detailed the “guilt” she feels about having access to “resources” amid her husband’s battle with dementia.
“When I can go for a walk to clear my head, it is not lost on me that not all caregivers can do that,” she wrote. “When what I share about our family’s journey catches the attention of the press, I know there are thousands of untold and unheard stories, and each one of them deserves compassion and concern.”
Emma also stated that she aspires to be an “advocate” for people who “don’t have the time, energy or resources to advocate for themselves.”
He continued, “I want people to know that when I listen to another family affected by FTD, I hear the same story of pain, loss, and immense sadness from our family echoing through theirs.”
Despite the challenges she and her family have faced, Emma stressed the importance of having a positive outlook.
“I am much more hopeful today than I was after Bruce was first diagnosed,” she wrote. “I now understand this disease better and am now connected to an incredible supportive community. I am hopeful that I have found a new purpose (certainly one I would never have sought): using the spotlight to help and empower others.”
