Breaking Bad Characters Become Na’vi In Strange Avatar 2 Fan Art

A bizarre but creative new piece of Avatar: The Way of Water fan art imagines what key Breaking Bad characters would look like as Na’vi. First airing on AMC in 2008, Breaking Bad tells the story of chemistry teacher Walter White (Bryan Cranston), who slowly builds an empire as a drug kingpin after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. The hit series sees Walt team up with high school burnout Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) to help get is meth business off the ground, but the duo eventually encounters serious trouble in the form of crime boss Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). Breaking Bad ultimately ran for 5 acclaimed seasons before coming to an end in 2013.

Following the recent release of Avatar: The Way of Water, the follow-up to James Cameron’s record-breaking 2009 film, Reddit user impetu0usness imagines Walt, Jesse, and Gus as the film’s blue Na’vi aliens.

The unique art even comes with a proposal to merge the two franchises for a new spinoff called “The Way of Walter”. Walt, Jesse, and Gus all retain some of their signature character traits and general facial structure, with Walt even sporting the signature goatee that he grows in the later seasons of Breaking Bad.

What’s Next For The Breaking Bad Universe?

Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn in Better Call Saul.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely that Breaking Bad will ever officially crossover with the Avatar franchise, but it could still live on in others forms. After the success of Breaking Bad, creator Vince Gilligan teamed up with Peter Gould to bring a spinoff show, Better Call Saul, to life. The spinoff earned rave reviews from audiences and critics, with some even claiming that it’s better than the original show. Better Call Saul came to a satisfying conclusion last year with season 6, but it’s not clear what the future of the Breaking Bad universe will be.

Gilligan offered up a somewhat cryptic response last summer when asked if he will be creating any additional Breaking Bad spinoffs, expressing that he “can definitely imagine revisiting” the franchise, but that there comes a point when it’s best to “leave it alone“. With Gilligan currently working on a new series with Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn, it looks like, even if he does return to the Breaking Bad well in the future, it may not be for quite a long time, depending on how his new series fares. If Gilligan were to create another spinoff show, it’s also unclear what it would be about after the definitive ending to Better Call Saul.

If another spinoff show ever does move forward, it seems quite clear at this point that Walt, Jesse, Gus, and Saul (Bob Odenkirk) will not be involved. The story of those characters has now been told and satisfyingly concluded meaning any spinoff after Better Call Saul would likely require an entirely new cast and be less connected to the original Breaking Bad story. Even if the franchise universe is at an end, the latest Breaking Bad art imagining a crossover with Avatar: The Way of Water speaks to just how beloved and influential Gilligan’s show remains.
