Actors Antonia Desplat and Erica Kilbe Chantalam, the latest original series on AppleTV+, based on the novel of the same name by Gregory David Roberts. Created by Steve Lightfoot and Eric Warren Singer, Chantalam According to Lin (son of anarchy Starring Charlie Hunnam, a man travels to 1980s Mumbai in search of some redemption and a life different from his previous life of crime.
Desplat and Kilbey play Kara and Lisa, respectively, two women Lin meets in Mumbai. They and the others Lim meets will define his journey in Mumbai and ultimately his life. Chantalam The first season of 12 episodes will air on AppleTV+, with new episodes coming out on Wednesdays.

Rant screen: Antonia, what drew you to Kara as a character and story? Chantalam overview?
Antonia Desplat: Well, when I auditioned, I just decided, I immediately fell in love with this book and really loved it. [it] and character. The more I read the book, the more I understood, she has big hands, she has this… maybe I can really play this role. Also, as a foreigner, you don’t meet such interesting characters every day. And I don’t go there often, so I can have fun. I think I can play this role.
I was attracted to her classes, she was very complex. And she will never tell. So there is so much going on inside her that she refuses to show it to the world. So there’s a constant push between the inner world and the outer world, which I think is interesting because for a performer, it’s very satisfying. So it was a dream role. I’m very, very grateful to be able to play her.
Elektra, when you do an adaptation like this, do you have this resource at hand, do you dig into it or do you prefer to stick to the script? What is your process there?
Elektra Kilbey: For me, it’s a bit different than Antonia playing Kara or Prabhu. Lisa is not necessarily the most discussed or described character in the book, maybe in the second one. The character I played in the TV adaptation was a cross between Ulla and Lisa. Of course, I have descriptions and feelings about them from the book. But I have more discussion about what’s on the scripting page. And putting all those pieces together is my version of Lisa Carter.
I know, photography is chaotic, full of breaks and changes of location. How does this affect your performance? Did you find it helpful because you could be a better fit for the role or was it more difficult?
Antonia Desplat: For me, the process is very fast. I almost had my audition, and two days later, I flew to Mumbai to read chemistry with Charlie. Two weeks later [I] Get the role and I have to fly out next week. It was such a big challenge, I thought I was petrified, I don’t think I had time to digest what was going on. So the power outage is probably a good thing because the information is always with me. I can digest it and really build on it. I was immersed in this book during the pandemic [and] Just read it over and over. I think, looking back, I’m back to filming Chantalam In a much more relaxed and prepared way than a crazy roller coaster ride, both emotionally and physically, because you just pack your backpack and go. So I’m grateful for that.
Elektra Kilbey: I agree with Antonia. It’s a perfect opportunity to take some time to get to know the character and be able to reframe and correct the things that don’t feel right or I don’t feel stuck with myself. I’ve come back a lot more relaxed and so am I, and we’ve matured a bit in that time. Just bring[ing] Give it more wisdom, give it more life experience. So I’m grateful for that.
