Brantley Gilbert moved to Nashville and signed with Warner Chappell Publishing, where he continued to play local venues. On October 27, 2009, he released his first album, Modern Day Prodigal Son, through the indie label Average Joes Entertainment. In 2011, he signed with Valory Music Co., part of Big Machine Records, and re-released Halfway to Heaven with fresh recordings and tunes.
His first two songs, “Country Must Be Country Wide” and “You Don’t Know Her As I Do,” topped the Hot Country Songs chart.
