Real Madrid soccer prodigy Brahim Diaz’s religion has remained a secret to his fans. Many say he follows Islam because of his father’s ties to Morocco. The footballer’s name is another strong indication of his faith, and his four younger sisters also have Arabic names. Some of Diaz’s followers claim that his father, Sufiel, is of Rifi descent and is not Arab.
Born and raised in Malaga, Brahim turned down Morocco’s invitation to compete at the 2018 World Cup. He made his debut for Spain in 2021, but last year he switched alliances and decided to play for Morocco. Sufiel, Brahim’s father, was only 17 when he and Patricia had their first child. Sufiel used to play football for Mortadelo, one of Malaga’s classic youth clubs. When he was three years old, he moved from Melilla to Mortadeolo. Sufiel’s agency, Sports&Life Group, now represents 36 athletes. Alongside Brahim, the agency represents Leeds United left-back Junior Firp and football icon Andres Iniesta.
