Barbra Streisand caused a stir on Instagram by publicly asking if Melissa McCarthy’s weight loss was thanks to Ozempic.
On Monday, the Bridesmaids The star shared an Instagram photo of herself alongside director Adam Shankman at the Center Theater Group’s 2024 Gala in Los Angeles. The event honored McCarthy’s friend Matthew Bourne as an artistic honoree.
“Pastries just to honor the incredible [Matthew Bourne] in it [Center Theatre Group] gala last night with this guy [Adam Shankman]!!” McCarthy wrote alongside the photo.
“This is much closer to my dream of dancing on stage.” The photograph captures McCarthy with a smile, dressed in a ruffled green dress.
However, the festivities took an awkward detour when Streisand posted a candid question in the comments section. “Give him my regards. Did you take Ozempic?” asked the legendary 82-year-old singer.
A screenshot of Barbra Streisand’s (now deleted) tactless public comment to Melissa McCarthy about Ozempic made its way to X (formerly Twitter).

Unsurprisingly, many Instagram users didn’t like Barb’s seemingly petty question. Fans were taken aback by Streisand’s frank questioning of McCarthy, especially since the actor’s Instagram post was not about weight.
“Barbara, if you don’t have something nice to say…” one fan wrote. “You drink. No, honey. Just no,” added a second fan. “What a shame,” a third fan chimed in.
Of course, others dragged the octogenarian for even daring to comment on social media. “Boomer aunt with wine and iPad energy,” one Instagram user joked. “Take the iPad away from Babs immediately!” added another.
However, Barbra Streisand had her defenders in the comments of Melissa McCarthy’s Instagram post. “Leave Barbara alone, she would never do that on purpose. I think she said it because of a private question,” one fan wrote.
“Barbra Streisand is a legend. “Who cares if she asked if she takes Ozempic, I take it and she is working great,” another added. “As an octogenarian, I think Babs probably thought she was texting him,” a third defender noted.
Meanwhile, McCarthy’s other star friends simply praised her outfit and beauty alongside Shankman. “Stunners!!”, cocaine bear gushed director Elizabeth Banks. “BEAUTIFUL!!!” added veteran actress Glenn Close. “Gorgeous,” SVU Star Mariska Hargitay echoed it.
Ozempic, a diabetes medication, has become immensely popular in Hollywood, endorsed by celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey. However, figures such as Kate Winslet have expressed criticism of its widespread use in the entertainment sector.
