Avinash Sable is an Indian track and field athlete who competes in the 3000 meters steeplechase event. He is serving on the post of Naib Subedar in the Indian Army. Avinash Sable won a silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase category at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham with a timing of 8:11.20.

After completing 12th class, Avinash Sable joined the Indian Army and was part of the 5th battalion of the Mahar Regiment. In 2013, he was posted as a Havildar in Siachen Glacier. In an interview, while talking about his experience in Siachen, he said,

There was snow all around me. I had never seen snow before and had nothing to do other than my duty. There was no network in the area and I was a junior. So, I didn’t know what to do or who to talk to.

In 2014, he was posted as an infantryman in Lalgarh Jattan near the Pakistan border in Rajasthan and in 2015, he was posted in Sikkim. Later Avinash was promoted to the rank of Naib Subedar in the Indian Army.

I started running only in 2015. The Army has an athletics scouting program and they selected me to be a cross country runner.

Later, in June 2017, Avinash competed for the first time as a steeplechaser in the 3000 m steeplechase category at the Indian Federation Cup 2017, clocking 9:06.42. In July 2021, he competed at the Tokyo Olympics and finished seventh with a timing of 8:18:12.

In September 2021, he participated in the Open National Athletics Championships held in Bhubaneswar. In July 2022, Avinash competed at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon and finished eleventh with a timing of 8:31.75.

  • In 2018, Avinash joined the national camp, and was trained by coach Nikolai Snesarev for the Asian Games 2018. However, after a few months, Sable went back to his Army coach Amrish Kumar. Reportedly, it was coach Nikolai’s rigorous training regime that forced him to return to his army coach. Talking about his coach Nikolai Snesarev in an interview, Avinash said,

    “Coach Snesarev is a very tough coach. He used to chase me a lot. He must have made me run about 150 kilometers every week.”

  • In April 2018, Avinash suffered an ankle injury and as a result, he was unable to participate in the Asian Games 2018.
  • In 2019, Avinash broke the national record at the Federation Cup 2019 in Patiala and he qualified for the World Athletics Championship 2019. He became the first Indian steeplechaser to qualify for the World Athletics Championships since Dina Ram in 1991.

  • In 2021, Avinash represented India at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and he became the first Indian steeplechaser to qualify for the Olympics in the 3000 m steeplechase category since 1952.
  • In an interview, Avinash revealed how mental health affected his performance at the World Championship. He said that he did not have any mental conditioning coach due to which he later started practicing meditation and yoga. Due to this, he performed so well in the 2023 Asian Games that he won two medals, one gold and one silver. Avinash Sable said,

    I was at the peak of my fitness during the World Championships. I thought I was capable of winning a medal but I didn’t know what happened to me. Since I am not able to win a medal even after two years of hard training, there is no harm in looking for a different training base and a new approach.
