Ashwini Vaishnav is an Indian politician and the Union Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronics and Information Technology. He is a former IAS officer of 1994 batch of Odisha cadre.

Ashwini Vaishnav, also known as Ashwini Vaishnav, was born on Saturday, 18 July 1970 (Age 51 years; till 2021) in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. His zodiac sign is Cancer. She did her schooling from St. Anthony’s Convent School and Mahesh School, Jodhpur. He was the topper of his state in class 11th board. He attended MBM Engineering College, Jai Narayan Vyas University, Jodhpur, Rajasthan to pursue BE and graduated with a gold medal in 1992. In 1994, he received an M.Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. After succeeding in the Civil Services Examination, he worked as an IAS officer. In 2008, he moved to the United States to pursue an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, where he graduated in 2010.

In 1993, he passed the UPSC examination with 27 AIR and was allotted Odisha cadre. As an IAS officer, he served as Collector in Balasore and Cuttack districts of Odisha. While he was completing his tenure in Balasore, the state was hit by a cyclone, which killed many people. Ashwini is said to have handled the situation skillfully, which brought her to the attention of politicians. The National Human Rights Commission appreciated Ashwin for the honesty, dedication and commitment displayed in organizing and implementing relief and rehabilitation work in his district. He worked as an IAS in Odisha until he was appointed as Deputy Secretary in the office of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2003.
While working in the PMO, he contributed to the creation of a public-private partnership framework in infrastructure projects. He was appointed as Private Secretary to Vajpayee after the BJP-led NDA lost the elections in 2004. In 2006, he became Vice Chairman of the Mormugao Port Trust, where he worked for the next two years, before moving to the US to pursue an MBA. After returning to India in 2010, he took voluntary retirement from his post due to financial debt incurred during his studies in the US.
Corporate Jobs and Entrepreneurship
After earning an MBA degree, he returned to India and joined GE Transportation as Managing Director. He then joined Siemens in Gurgaon as vice president of locomotives and head of urban infrastructure strategy. He also served as one of three directors at Thriveni Pellets Pvt Ltd, a unit of Thriveni Earth Movers Pvt Ltd, one of India’s largest mine developers. In 2012, he left his corporate job to start 3T Auto Logistics Pvt Ltd and VG Auto Components Pvt Ltd, both automotive component manufacturing units in Gujarat. Talking about this in an interview he said,
I went to Gujarat and built my units by living in a container for 7 months because I wanted that factory to be ready in record time.
Politics
In June 2019, Ashwini joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Vaishnav won the Rajya Sabha elections unopposed in Odisha with the help of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) members, raising eyebrows over rival BJP and RJD ties. This came as many members of the ruling BJD opposed his nomination and suspected that BJP supremo Naveen Patnaik had succumbed to Narendra Modi-Amit Shah pressure to support Vaishnav. On 28 June 2019, he was appointed as a member of the Committee on Subordinate Legislation and Petitions and the Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests. He has argued that the economic recession in India was cyclical in nature and not a structural recession. He believed that it was better to invest money rather than spend it on consumption. He supported the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Rajya Sabha on 5 December 2019. He also raised issues ranging from ship recycling bill to women’s safety in the Rajya Sabha. In April 2021, he was appointed as a member of the Press Council of India (PCI) for three years. On 8 July 2021, when there was a cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed as the Minister of Railways, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology and Minister of Communications.
