In Oregon, Dan Steele Eaton was coached by a former track and field athlete. Steele defeated Eaton in the 1500m, hurdles, high jump and pole vault. He improved his pole vault by 1.2m in a year and scored 8,000 points in his sixth collegiate pentathlon. After Steele left for Northern Iowa in 2010, Eaton was coached by pentathlon coach Harry Marra.
Eaton won the 2008 NCAA pentathlon Eaton won the 2009 NCAA pentathlon with 8,241 points. He won the 2009 NCAA Indoor Heptathlon with 5,988 points. Eaton won the Division I track and field championship in 2009.
Eaton broke the world record in triathlon at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships. In 2010, he won the NCAA triathlon title for the third time in a row with 8,457 points. He was the first person to win a triathlon in a row.
