At the weekend before the 32-Man Showdown in London, Andrew Elliott’s home field advantage proved crucial. The former Lakehead University wrestler and now the Adrenaline Training Center wrestler defeated Bryan Fedynszyn in a championship match to complete his perfect day to claim the 2012 32-man title.

Adrenaline’s Andrew Elliott was the last survivor in a 32-man match.

This activity was organized as part of the Sports and Leisure exhibition in the Agriplex at the Western Fair. Elliott won a razor-sharp 5-minute match against the bigger Fedynszyn, a match that required sudden death injury time to decide the winner using a great combination of speed , strength and cunning technique.

Elliott succeeded in securing a strong pitch and holding in place for a surprise win in extra time. Elliott, who is currently being coached by James Hourt and Rowan Cunningham at the Adrenaline Training Center, truly deserves the win. Ironically, Elliott defeated his much shorter teacher Haourt in the semi-finals.

Elliott and I chatted for a bit after the incident. “I have a history of wrestling; I wrestled in high school and college at Lakehead University. In fact, one of my former teammates from my university took first place in the Gi division.

“I’ve been taught a bit of mixed martial arts by John Fraser since high school and now I’m back here at Adrenaline in London.”

Elliott trains hard, as evidenced by his performance Sunday against John “The Haggis Basher” Fraser, one of the nation’s best mixed martial artists. Elliott has well positioned himself to excel in the sport in the future by working with top athletes at Adrenaline in London and Fraser in Sarnia. Elliott answered emphatically when I asked him if this was the toughest test ever for an opponent of his caliber:

“Everything is unique; it’s hard to compare them. Wrestling has extremely difficult events, but today’s opponents have been excellent. The final here is tough; I had to fight for every takedown, and even when I did, I had to protect my arm because he threatened to strangle me.

Showdown, which runs three times, is special because it is an “open weight challenge”, while all other competitions are organized by weight class. Each weight class has a semifinalist, with Elliott (165 pounds), Fedynszyn (215 pounds) and Dave Knowles.
