livelihood

After his graduation, he worked as a doctor in the city government hospital in Nallalam, a small village near Tindivanam. After working for one and a half years, he left his job as a medical practitioner. He later joined Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), a political party in Tamil Nadu founded by his father, in 1989 and became president of the party youth wing. In 2004, Anbumani Ramadoss became a member of the Rajya Sabha on the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) ticket as part of the UPA. On 22 May 2004, Anbumani became the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare in the government of Manmohan Singh. He remained in this post till 29 March 2009.

In 2005, the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), a sub-mission under the National Health Mission (NHM), was established under the chairmanship of Anbumani Ramadoss. AIIMS director removed in unconventional manner

In 2006, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare ‘Anbumani Ramadoss’ appointed one of the country’s leading cardiologists, Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), ‘Dr. P. Venugopal’ dismissed. He alleged that Dr. P. Venugopal had violated the conduct rules of a government servant by publicly accusing the government of interfering in the functioning of AIIMS. Even before the commission constituted by the government could look into the matter and give its verdict, Dr. P. Venugopal was removed.

Arrest for hate speech

In May 2013, Anbumani Ramadoss was arrested by the Kanchipuram police in Chennai in an old case. He was charged in a hate speech case filed against him in 2012. On 25 April 2012, PMK cadre allegedly set fire to the houses of ten Dalits in Markannam. However, PMK has denied these allegations. PMK workers set fire to at least 3 buses and damaged more than 100 government buses following the arrest of their leader in 2013.

In 2014, Anbumani Ramadoss was accused of allegedly attempting to instigate people on the basis of caste. Anbumani and her supporters distributed CDs during the election campaign in Dharmapuri constituency. The purpose of these CDs was to remind the Vanniyar community of the Marakkanam violence and the controversial inter-caste marriage of a Vanniyar girl with a Dalit youth. A case was registered against Ramdas under IPC sections related to promoting enmity between different groups, issuing statements inciting public nuisance and violating the model code of conduct.

In 2014, Anbumani Ramadoss along with four others were accused of abusing their power and favoring Rohilkhand Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) in granting renewals for admission to the MBBS course for the year 2008–09. In 2012, he was involved in a similar case, where he allowed Index Medical College and Research Center (IMCHRC), Indore, to proceed with admissions without adequate faculty and clinical material.

Arrested for violent protest

In July 2023, a protest in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu turned violent and some PMK party workers allegedly pelted stones at the police, following which Anbumani Ramadoss and her supporters were detained by the police. Ramdas gave a speech demanding that NLC (Nyveli Lignite Corporation) stop acquiring farmers’ land to expand its mine projects.
