Amit Rabindranath Sharma is a film director and advertising film producer. He is famous for directing ‘Badhaai Ho’, one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2018.

Amit Sharma was born in a Punjabi Brahmin family. His father Rabindranath Sharma worked as a government employee. His mother worked in the engineering department of Doordarshan and died in a car accident in 2008. He has an elder sister.
Amit met Aleya Sen at the age of 21. In 2004, the couple married and have a son, Rosh.
livelihood
After completing her schooling, she contacted director Pradeep Sarkar through a friend of her mother. While sharing the entire incident in an interview, he said,
I managed to connect with Pradeep Sarkar, who was also making independent films. Ten days later I got a call asking me to come to this studio and if you have a girlfriend then bring her along. I never had a girlfriend, so I got there and there were two girls passing by on the way out of the studio and I asked them, ‘Do you want to act?’ And they were both just like you. I said, ‘Come with me.’ And I took them both in.”
He got the role of junior artist in Limca’s TV advertisement. Later, he met Pradeep Sarkar and was selected as the lead actor in an advertising film, which was shot in Manali. In an interview he said,
It took me 18 hours to reach Manali, but my shooting was over in just 2 hours. October 9 was my mother’s birthday and I faced the camera for the first time. I didn’t want to go back and I told Dada, ‘I want to stay here and work with you.’ He allowed me to stay there and I kept in touch with him even while I was in school, after which I joined him.
Amit worked with Pradeep for about six years. In 2001, he moved from Delhi to Mumbai with Pradeep Sarkar. He worked with them for two years and in 2003, Amit founded his own production company, ‘Chrome Pictures’, with his girlfriend (now wife) Aleya Sen Sharma and childhood friend Hemant Bhandari.
From 2005 to 2015, he directed over 900 ad films for companies including Amazon, P&G, Visa Debit Card, Lifebuoy, Cadbury, Honda, HUL, Nestle, Sony, Samsung and Tata Sky. In 2011, he won an award at the ‘Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity’ for directing ‘The Silent National Anthem’, in which ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was presented to deaf and mute children through sign language.
He won a gold medal at the ‘Spikes Asia Awards’ in 2013 for ‘Lifebuoy Advertisement’; Focusing on cleanliness in Indian villages. In November 2013, they released another TV commercial ‘Google Reunion’; Depicts a fictional story based on the partition of India. That year, The Economic Times described his work as “Indian advertising’s contemporary greatest hits”.
In 2015, he debuted as a Bollywood film director with ‘Tevar’, but the film failed to perform well at the box-office.
He gained immense popularity with the 2018 blockbuster film ‘Badhaai Ho’.
In 2019, he announced the Hindi film ‘Maidan’ to be released on 11 December 2020. The film is based on the golden era of Indian football 1952–1962. The film stars Ajay Devgan, Priyamani and Gajraj Rao in lead roles.

- In an interview, Amit said that he entered the film industry because of his mother. he adds,
My mother worked in the engineering department of Doordarshan and unlike my father who was a complete film buff, she had no interest in films, even she would go with him every Friday to watch the latest movie, But she used to do this during the interval. Fall into a deep sleep in the hall. But the irony is that I came into this industry because of my mother. So once I came back home from school, my mother called me and asked, ‘Will you do modeling?’ Will you act? She read every word in the newspapers and had seen an advertisement seeking models for serials.”
- He used to participate in his school’s theater plays and wanted to become an actor.
- He considers Pradeep Sircar and Shoojit Sircar as his gurus. In an interview he said,
I learned direction from Pradeep da and production from Shoojit sir and we started making ad films. Pradeep da is a very amazing man. When he made Parineeta in 2004, he called me to assist him. But at that time I was getting married to Aleya. I called him and told him that Dada is asking me to postpone my marriage and he is fine. Then I called my mom who said, ‘Are you crazy? There is no date for another year. I decided to marry Aleya instead of working on Parineeta.
- In an interview he shared an unfortunate incident of his family, he said,
In 2008, both my parents and my sister’s children had to go from Delhi to Jind in Haryana for a family wedding. My father’s driver had gone on holidays. I was shooting in South Africa, so I called my father and insisted on sending him in a rented car. They left Delhi at 8.30 in the morning and an hour later, the driver fell asleep and met with an accident, which took my mother away from me. I miss her.”
- His father was in depression after his mother’s death. So, Amit and his sister decide to convince her to marry again. While sharing this incident in an interview he said,
My sister and I, without his knowledge, registered him on a matrimony website to find a relationship for him. It took us four years to convince him, but finally we convinced him and got him married again. I said to him, ‘Papa, why are you thinking about what people will think? They’re not going to take care of you.’ He said, ‘You loved your mother the most and yet you are asking me to marry you again?’ I reminded him how one day my mother had jokingly told him, ‘If anything happens to me, you should get married.’ I have now bought a house for him and he lives there.
- In an interview, he said that the story of the 2018 film ‘Badhaai Ho’ is inspired by his real life. He said,
My grandmother and great-grandmother were pregnant at the same time. So what you see in the film has also been a part of my family story.
