Alka Lamba joined the National Students Union of India (NSUI) in 1994 and was appointed as the Delhi State Students Convenor. In 1995, he won the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) election for the post of President. In 1996, Alka Lamba was appointed as the All India Students Convenor for NSUI and in 1997 she was appointed as the President of All India NSUI. Alka became the General Secretary of All India Mahila Congress in 2002. In 2003, he contested the Delhi Assembly elections. He lost further against BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana from Moti Nagar constituency. In 2006, Lamba became a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and was named as the General Secretary of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC).
