Alexander Shevchenko News

On Monday, world number three Daniil Medvedev defeated his buddy and fellow Russian citizen Alexander Shevchenko 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 to go to the fourth round of the Madrid Open. Before finally meeting in person last year, the Russian team played online games together for six years.

Their two-hour, 42-minute match in the Spanish city was their first time facing off against one another. For the first time ever in Madrid, Medvedev, who freely acknowledges that he struggles on clay, started out slowly but eventually displayed his talent to win back-to-back matches.

Shevchenko, who had been playing well prior to the match, converted his third break point in the opening game before breaking once more to take a 4-0 lead.

However, the 22-year-old was too impatient in his attempt to win the opening set, which gave second seed Medvedev the opportunity to rally. At 5-2, Shevchenko missed two set points, and Medvedev broke and consolidated to put further pressure on the 96th-ranked player in the world. When his 27-year-old compatriot missed on the third attempt, the qualifier eventually won the opening set.

The engagement with the spectators at the Caja Magica seemed to excite Medvedev, who had trouble winning points with his serve. Medvedev put his palm to his ear to encourage the crowd.

In the first game of the second set, the winner of the 2021 US Open held off two break points before breaking on his own and securing a 3-0 lead. In the following game, Shevchenko held off five break points but ultimately Medvedev prevailed and held to love as he recovered his stride, serving it out to demand a third set.

With a drop shot, the young player broke for 2-0, but Medvedev immediately retaliated in kind, and Shevchenko once more was unable to consolidate after breaking for a 4-2 advantage. When Shevchenko began to cramp, Medvedev conceded a break to leave the second seed serving for the match after he had fended off three break points to tie the match at 4-4. Shevchenko saved one set point, but Medvedev won with a forehand winner to advance to the round of 16, where he will play either Aslan Karatsev or Alex de Minaur.
