controversies
- In October 2010, Aditya came into limelight when he protested outside Mumbai University. He was protesting against a book included in the university’s curriculum, which he claimed contained derogatory language about Indian culture. He said that Rohinton Mistry’s book ‘Such a Long Journal’ used abusive language about Indian culture and students should not be forced to read such a book. He also said that he had no problem with the book being sold in the open market, but he did not want it to be included in the university curriculum. Ultimately the Vice-Chancellor of the University had to remove this book from the curriculum. However, it was later revealed that while Aditya was opposing the book, he had never read the book, and was only acting on what he had heard about the book.
- Aditya’s statement given in Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana before the Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2014 was criticized by many sections of the society. He said that “Gujaratis and other non-Marathi businessmen have extracted a lot from Mumbai, and they use Mumbai like a “charming prostitute” to build their Dwarka (city of gold).” However, Aditya later had to apologize for his remarks.
- On 12 October 2015, before a book release event, Shiv Sena workers attacked Sudhindra Kulkarni, a scholar and columnist, and covered his face with ink. Kulkarni was going to attend the book launch of former Pakistan minister Khurshid Kasuri. Aditya Thackeray justified this act of Shiv Sena workers and said that the attack was non-violent, democratic and historic and anyone who supports anti-national elements will be treated similarly. Many journalists criticized his statement and said that what happened to Kulkarni was completely unfair.
