Contents
in kind
Ruth Wilder (Part 1, Volume 1):
I’m interested in the real part, not the secretaries telling powerful men that their wives are second in line.
Ruth Wilder is the perfect example of a strong, kind actress trying to succeed on the big screen without giving up her feminism and dignity. Even though she plays Zoya in the GLOW production, she firmly believes that she is destined to help the film and not just be a women’s wrestling match.
Ruth uttered this amazing line after an audition, happened to read the (strong) part of the man, but was told by the casting director that she should read the woman’s lines, aka letter sign. The line confronts the nature of the industry and Ruth’s determination not to accept it.
select
Debbie Egan (Part 1, Episode 1):
Things don’t just happen. Everyone makes choices. They want something, and they go for it.
Debbie Egan is another strong force in the series, which is probably why she and Ruth don’t seem to get along. Debbie is full of monotonous tones, but some of them are stronger than others.
Throughout the film, Debbie’s character goes back and forth between despair and acceptance, strength and determination. This quote definitely stands for the second, which proves once again that Debbie is ambitious and that unless you work for them, you’re not going to get anywhere.
Sleeping Beauties
Sam Sylvia (Part 1, Episode 2):
You are so beautiful. You have big boobs and soap opera writers don’t expect you to have brains. Am I right? You ask too many questions, perhaps you improvise too many lines, and then, boom, Sleeping Beauty.
Debbie Egan (Part 1, Episode 2):
Well, if you try to do more than nod, eat salad and make a pretty sad face, you will be punished.
While Sam is almost the complete embodiment of the creepy, sexist, and self-serving TV producer, he’s also the outspoken, outspoken king of truth. Somehow, this line contains sexism, feminism, and promotes huge character development.
Through this conversation, we get to know Sam’s perception of the nature of the industry and we learn why Debbie was fired for her soap opera. Though delivered in a blunt and humorous way, the quote confronts Hollywood with brevity and force.
for you
Sam Sylvia (Part 1, Episode 2):
Now you are here. You’ve grown. fertile. New life guardian. You are a…you are a goddess of fertile harvest. Now… pull back and strut like you own the ring.
Again, Sam isn’t exactly known for his feminist ideology, but he knows how to bring out the best in women, even if that means appealing to her physical beauty. Surname.
While the line really can’t make you laugh because Marc Maron puts it dry and funny, we still appreciate the concept and we applaud his effort in appreciating it. High beauty of female fertility. These women are goddesses.
this is for me
Sheila Wolf (Part 1, Episode 4):
I have worn this, or some version of this, every day for the past five years. These are not clothes. only me. What I do in the morning…what I wear, what I wear, doesn’t suit you. This is for me.
Sheila spends almost all of her screen time on herself, battling ignorance and trying to fit in. In the end, Ruth broke down some of her walls, and Sheila shares this beautiful truth that all women and men can understand.
While none of us can relate directly to Sheila, we all know what it feels like to struggle to find ourselves, and we can all benefit from thinking like Sheila. Are you booing, hello.
limit challenge
Sam Sylvia (Part 1, Episode 4):
Yes, this is the problem. That’s mid lane shit. It’s safe. you see me? I like pushing the limits. I love waking people up.
For such a controversial role, Sam has made this list multiple times. This saying in itself is a good life motto.
We can all use a little ingenuity and spontaneity, and maybe that’s what we can really take away from Sam (minus mass sex, cocaine, and painful loneliness). ).
alma behind hitchhiking
Ruth Wilder (season 2, episode 1):
Alfred Hitchcock and his wife? Alma, you know, the woman behind the man is just as important as the man and really helps the man to be great while at the same time getting the job done.
Ruth returned to her idea that women deserve more credit; Let’s be honest, we’ve had enough. He was confused when Ruth suggested that she could be the Alma for Sam’s Alfred, but Ruth quickly figured it all out.
She doesn’t have to say much to show that all women have their roles. Even behind the scenes, they are contributing to greatness. However, we also wish there were more women up front, but Ruth covered that up too.
everybody
Rhonda Richardson (season 2, episode 5):
Perverts are people too.
This simple (and certainly bold) quote must have a place on this list. Rhonda isn’t the brightest crayon in the box (which, of course, ironically contradicts her wrestling personality), but this pure innocence really does carry a lot of weight.
Regardless of one’s reputation, everyone deserves and needs a little kindness in their lives.
difference
Ruth Wilder (season 2, episode 5)
I’ve been acting almost all my life, and it’s always just been another audition, another meeting, a year waiting for someone to let you do what you want. But eventually I’ll do something, it feels different, you know? I feel the difference. strong. In control.
This is probably Ruth’s best quote in the entire series to date. It covers everything about her personality and what it is like to follow her dreams and ambitions. While she’s specifically talking about acting, that quote translates to people everywhere, no matter what they’re trying to achieve.
We all deserve a chance to achieve our goals, sometimes it takes longer than expected. Like Ruth, you never give up.
“It shouldn’t be like that…”
Debbie Egan (season 2, episode 5)
Men try to poop and you have to pretend to like it until you don’t have to anymore.
Ruth Wilder (season 2, episode 5)
It shouldn’t be like this.
Debbie Egan (season 2, episode 5)
No, it shouldn’t, women should be straight at 30 instead of being cut out, I should eat a piece of my own wedding cake and not have to worry about Jane f *how many minutes* King Fonda it needs to be fixed but that’s it is the way it is.
Honestly, this quote is sad, but it’s also one of the most powerful light appeared in its first two seasons. This conversation holds no bright hope, but it offers a brief, honest confrontation between the media industry and systemic sexism.
Both Ruth and Debbie are forced to use their genders to get ahead because their genders are not taken seriously. These two women still give us hope, hope that’s not always the case. “It’s not supposed to be,” and we’ll work hard until it doesn’t.
