Terraria: How to Grow Gem Trees & Plant Gemcorns

Update the end of the journey Terraria Added many new items for players to find and craft in the world. With nearly 1,000 new items, it can be difficult for players to keep track of the new items in the game and what kind of items they can create with them. One of the newest items that players may not have known about is gems.

Gem Beads are beads made from gems that can be planted in the ground to grow into a Jade Tree. In return, these trees can be cut down for more gems and gem corn. Players may not know how to get gems, or even how to farm gems. This guide is intended to help players understand the new features.

Terraria: How to Craft Gems

Making gem corn is actually a relatively simple process. Players just need to explore the ground until they come across any gems they want to plant. Once obtained, the player also needs to chop down a tree on the surface to get an acorn and combine the two. This will give the player a brand new Gem Corn, which will grow into a tree. Players can craft specific gem corn with any gem, so there are seven different variations based on each of the different gems.

Terraria: Planting Gems

Once players have their own pearl corn, they won’t be able to plant them at will. The Gem will only grow under certain circumstances, so the player needs to go to the Underground or the Cave first and plant the Gem on the Rock or Moss. Gem plants cannot grow on any other material or surface.

Players will need to make sure their gem tree is in complete darkness to start growing at the same rate as regular trees. A gem tree can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes to reach its full height if the right conditions are met. Once fully mature, the player can start harvesting gems by chopping down trees with an ax. Usually, each tree will give the player 0-5 gems and gem nuggets. This means players can quickly come back and replant gems and earn them. If this is done multiple times, the player will end up swimming in hundreds of gems.
