Kaguya’s Royal Kimono – The Story of Kaguya
Set in Japan’s Heian period, Kaguya Hime wears the beautiful dresses or kimonos of the time. She goes through experiences that mark her fascinating and tragic transition from an impoverished bamboo worker and miraculous adopted daughter of a small-town artisan to the fate of an isolated and lonely teenager living as a member of the royal family.
Kaguya switched to traditional makeup that included brushing her black teeth and plucking her eyebrows, a royal custom at the time, and she seemed to enjoy and appreciate her nature-themed kimono. Her most notable look is the gorgeous kimono and underwear she wore during her last cherry blossom viewing.

Princess Mononoke’s Temporary Warrior Costume – Princess Mononoke
Princess Mononoke spends most of her life in the forest. Dressed in battle paint and seemingly made of bone accessories, the young woman represents her upbringing with the wolf god, her love and respect for nature, and her warrior identity.

Haku & Jinbe’s Haori Coat – Spirited Away
The lovely and unforgettable River God Bai, who wears the same outfit throughout the film, appears in human form in River God. The land of the soul. But what makes him so memorable, aside from the dramatic aspects of the character, is how different his design is from a regular Ghibli character, possibly due to his alternate ego being a mythical creature.
His eyes are narrower and green, while his hair is kept in a neat, flowing style. He wears a white jacket and a purple jinbe belt that, although different in color, resembles the uniform Chirhio wears to work.
Sophie’s dark blue dress and silver hair – Howl’s Moving Castle
Sophie Hart from Howl .’s Moving Castle is one of the more approachable characters, as she admits to being insecure about her modest appearance. She hides her hair under a hat and wears a casual blue dress, both of which later change after she is cursed to be an old woman, gradually becoming her own as her confidence and self-assurance grow.
With the help of Howl’s magic, Sophie’s dress became brighter and the fabric seemed better. Her hair also goes from brown and gray (as she gets older) to bright silver as she loves and staunchly protects her new family.
Cedar’s new pirate costume – Laputa
Sida, through most of the time Castle on the cloud, Wearing a very casual dark purple dress, braided hair and a headband. The most interesting addition to her look is the highly sought after magic pendant, which has been passed down in her family for generations. This remained that way until Sita was taken over by Dora’s pirates, where she went to work and was given new clothes that allowed her to move freely and more realistically.
Humorously, the parachute-like pants and shirt were passed on to her by Dora, a tall, muscular adult woman. This forced Hilda to make and tie her clothes so that they fit her better.
Spirited Away Costume
Chihiro’s two outfits The land of the soul As she transforms into a more empathetic, compassionate, responsible, and mature teenager, her character exhibits great duality. From start to finish in her first outfit, Chihiro wears simple and relatively modern pastel summer outfits, consisting of a white t-shirt with light blue stripes, salmon pink shorts, and yellow sneakers.
The clothes also represent Chihiro’s loss of identity as Chihiro is later renamed “Mori” by Mrs. Yu, and she is given a pink uniform and a Tasuki string to tie at work. Chihiro’s allies give her old clothes so nothing will remind her before she loses her real name and identity.
Nausicaa’s overalls – Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds
Similar to Princess Mononoke’s athleticism, size, and need for practical, breathable clothing, Princess Nausicaa wears a light blue jumpsuit with utility pockets, a light brown jumpsuit, and sturdy boots. Her uniform resembles the ancient legend/prophecy about the messiah she came to fulfill, helping to compare Nausicaa to the messiah.
She also wears a protective mask that helps her breathe while visiting deadly poison forests ravaged by poison spores. The suit is also capable of being very aerodynamic, as she often travels in a light flight suit and carries items like weapons with her. Finally, she also wears red gem earrings.
