Who Is Zack De La Rocha
Beto was a part of Los Four, the first Chicano art collective to have work displayed in a museum (LACMA, 1973), and he painted murals. Jose Isaac de la Rocha Acosta (1882–1920), a Mexican rebel who fought in the Mexican Revolution, was De la Rocha’s great-grandpa. In the United States, his grandfather Isaac de la Rocha, who lived from 1909 to 1985, worked in agriculture. Later, De La Rocha would observe how the Zapatista Army of National Liberation’s battles mirrored the struggles his grandfather faced.

Zack De La Rocha Injury
A TMZ report claims that on July 11, 2022, as Zack and his bandmates were performing in Chicago’s United Center, something went awry with the famed vocalist. After only four songs, Zack began performing “Bullet in the Head” while standing on one leg.
Zack addressed the crowd about his injury momentarily before the next song, “Testify,” began. Louder Sound claims that the singer told the audience, “I don’t know what happened to my leg right now.” However, do you know what? This f—king s—t will continue to be done. I can lean over this platform. We’re going to perform for you all tonight.” As was to be expected, the crowd lost it.

Zack De La Rocha Career
De la Rocha and Tim Commerford first became friends in elementary school, and in junior high, they joined a band called Juvenile Expression where they both played guitar. De la Rocha developed an admiration for other bands including Minor Threat, Bad Brains, and The Teen Idles after becoming interested in punk rock groups like The Clash, The Misfits, Sex Pistols, and Bad Religion. He joined the hard-edge band Hard Stance in 1987. Hard Stance’s complete discography was formally published by Indecision Records in 2018.
By 1988, Hard Stance’s lead vocalist Eric Ernst had left the band, thus Rocha assumed that position. The remaining members, now without a guitarist, got in touch with Vic DiCara, whom they knew from a previous band they were in but never got past rehearsals. This group, now known as Inside Off, started off by strongly drawing inspiration from bands like Minor Threat and the Bad Brains and quickly became involved in the youth crew movement. The EP No Spiritual Surrender, which was their only release, was made available through Revelation Records in 1990.
De la Rocha collaborated with DJ Shadow, El-P, Muggs, Dan The Automator, Roni Size, DJ Premier, and Questlove on a solo album he had been working on with his producing partner James Poyser since Rage Against the Machine was disbanded. The album was never finished, so de la Rocha began working with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails on a new project, in which about 20 songs were made. Reznor called the effort “excellent” but predicted that it would never be made into a record since de la Rocha wasn’t “ready to make a record” at the time.
Zack De La Rocha Controversies
Zack de la Rocha’s Rage Against The Machine bandmate Tom Morello has given him some praise, saying that he is, in his opinion, a better performer than 99% of other frontmen “in the history of all time,” even when they are injured.
Due to breaking his anterior cruciate ligament on the second night of Rage Against The Machine’s Public Service Announcement reunion tour at Chicago’s United Center in 2022, de la Rocha had been playing Rage Against The Machine performances while seated for the previous year. After just 18 concerts, the band was forced to postpone all further dates due to difficulties with the leg injury.
The Rage guitarist was asked by Rolling Stone how he felt about the frontman’s injuries after learning that he was “pretty badly” damaged. “Well, the irony is that I had just recovered from a ruptured Achilles,” says Morello. “I was using crutches during rehearsals. The gait was recognizable. Zack, though, persevered that evening. He outperformed 99.99 percent of all frontmen in history during the following 17 performances while perched on a box in the center of the stage.
“It was totally unexpected, but the fact that he soldiered on…and he didn’t just soldier on, but he was able to be that electric, compelling, powerful transmitter of truth that he is, while remaining relatively immobile, was fairly impressive,” the speaker says. Nobody who watched the show told me they thought it had lost any of its power.
The 2023 North American tour, which was scheduled to begin last month, was also canceled by RATM as a result of the leg injury.
